Presenter somewhat annoying...

The MK5 is designed to use the higher octane fuel. I won't go into it but its to do with how the FSI engine works (if your interested have a quick Google of how the FSI engine works). Even a standard MK5 will see benefits from it.
Having said that its bloody expensive, I personally just use the usual stuff purely for cost reasons. Used to use it when fuel was cheaper and I didn't have mortgage to pay and tbh, I really struggled to see that much difference. Still, the facts speak for themselves.

Blimey that's quite some variation on the Scooby tests.

thats why any scoob i have gets v-power

A guy I know who i was speaking to the other day, says he always adds 20% methanol to a tank of V-Power and it gives him a further 15% power on top of the extra 5-8% he gets from using Shell's finest over other leading brands of super unleaded

I always run my cars on v- power or higher octane fuel. I've read the back to back tests and accept them. I don't have time to faff about doing my own laborious tests, so use 98-99 Ron fuel as standard. The tests say you get around 28 extra miles to a tank and the extra cost of v-power over 95 Ron is around £4 a tank, so effectively you should get the cost back and also get the added benefits of more power and extra longevity of the engine for free. The fact that you shouldn't use 95 Ron once mapped is also a factor.

I've just equated this myself as can be seen in my thread. It's a no brainer really

Only ever used V Power in my ED30. Worth the few extra pennies over the 95 ron.

I also run my GTi on Shell's finest fuel - V-Power and I collect the money off fuel vouchers which all helps.
My previous two cars - Volvo S60R - I chose to run the car on the higher octane fuel. This was because when I ran 95RON the engine was much more rougher, not as refined, slower and did not drive right. As soon as I ran a tank of the 98/99 Shell through, it was like I have a new car.
As that Fifth Gear test shows, some cars are not meant to have the higher octane fuel, whereas some take great benefit from it. Its like I don't run very well of fast food, but give me a proper home cooked meal and I fly. You get the idea.
If you are unsure of what fuel to use, look in the cars owners manual or on the inside of the fuel flap.

Do you think I should use the 95 ron like it suggests on my mk4 flap or the more expensive options like I normally do? Won't do any harm will it?

The V-Power will clean your engine if nothing else. Usually gives better mpg return, certainly more than enough to cover the extra £3.50 it'll cost you to fill a 12 gallon tank. So yeah DO it and NO it won't do your car any harm......

I've just filled my gti DSG up with v power for the first time (as opposed to the BP version) I'm finding my exhaust is popping/burbling a lot more so it does appear to make a difference
-
I had a MK5 seat ibiza cupra before my MK5 GTI and putting tesco momentum 99 or v power in it would give a much smoother throttle and around an extra 70 miles out of a tank..... not tried it in the golf yet, next tank will be momentum.....

Wtf I thought the Gti's were 200bhp not 168 :@ ???
-
?????
-
Probably at the wheels??
-
What's he difference mate?
-
Basically the power difference lost through the drive train and actually put through the wheels onto the tarmac rather than measured at the flywheel with no loads.
-
Ok m8 thanks, not to clued up with cars but sort of get it lol :s

My local Shell has been closed now for the last 2 months for a re-furb. Been using Texaco super & it's only 97 but not noticed any change other than the exhaust pipes don't seem to get as much black soot on them as they did when using the Shell V Power?.
