Title: Golf GTI MKII - 160,000 miles - buying advice
Post by: LeMoose on 15 September 2012, 18:06
Hi,

My 08 mini Cooper D has just gone into the garage for a replacement clutch and fly wheel which had only done 33000 miles and at the astronomical cost of £2000. I am currently in dispute with mini and will not be paying the full price to have the car repaired however it has prompted me to think about replacing the mini for an old 1990 GTI MK2 with 160,000 miles on the clock, £1600.

I have read various buying guides which outline what to look for and it seems relatively straight forward, however I was wondering if anyone had and practical day to day advice on the running of the car - My main concerns are to do with reliability issues with so many miles on the clock as well as running costs and servicing costs (what are they like?). It comes with replaced suspension and a new exhaust a new gearbox and new valeo clutch on it Full service, including oil change, Cambelt Kit and Water pump as well as being in impeccable condition on the outside. Once repaired the mini should fetch £10,000 on a private sale which leaves me plenty of money to save for a rainy day should anything with the Golf go wrong, so please shed some light of your experiences with the beasts especially if you have one with such a milage on.

Cheers in advance,

Buy on body work 1st...

Mileage isn't that important (but for your budget I would be looking for one with about 100-120K..) as long as it been well maintained and serviced regularly...

My Mr's car is her daily with 175K and we have had only a couple of minor issues but when I compare it to mine with 120K you can feel the difference in the tightness of certain parts....

But Body work & Lack of rust must be your primary concern...
