Title: Steering Rack / Tie Rods / LOOSE AS HELL!
Post by: Xtrhardcore on 15 September 2012, 16:44
Hi guys,

Steering has finally gone, had it tracked, replaced top mounts, replaced wishbones and bushes, no joy! I can physically move the wheel when jacked up left and right about 3 inches! Steering is scary as hell!

Anyone got a guide for replacing the rack and/or the tie rods?

Do you reckon its worth changing the tie rods and rack rod ends first before replacing the rack?

Cheers!!

Is the play in the tie rods, rack or steering joint?

Remove the lower cover in the drivers foot well and check the steering column universal joint as they are known to wear causing play,

You can also check the tie rod by holding the big nut part that screws into the rack ( will be covered by the boot ) and the actual tie rod and have some one move the wheel left-to right and see if the tie rod is moving in the cup.
Might be easier if you slide the boot further along the tie rod.

Once you have ruled out the tie rod and steering column you can start considering the rack,

I had the same problem, my steering was loose as hell, I replaced the tie rods which helped slightly but didnt cure it.
My steering was always off centre whilst driving, even after have tracking and alignment done.
After replacing my rack with a reconditioned unit the steering was back to normal

Also worth noting there will be a bit of play in the rack if the engine is not running

Ok cool, if i jack the car up and grab the wheel at 9:15 i can move it front side to side, i can also grab the tie rods and move them in and out.
I completely think it has something to do with that, rather than the steering column but i'll check that out too to be on the safe side!

So hold the tie rod with one hand and the cup with the other and get some one to move the wheel.
You should be able to feel the tie rod move but the cup stay put if thats the problem,

Easy to change if it is, replace the tie rods and ends though.

Does sound like tie rods though.
