Title: Mk3 GTI subframe, mk4 02J gearbox combination
Post by: Dave_IOW on 14 September 2012, 19:52
So, what driveshafts do I use?

Will 02J ones work, or do I need the 02A ones and fit the 02A cups to the 02J box?

You answered your own question. Bolt in cups only.

Sure of that?

Got any examples where people have tried it?  Driveshaft length to illustrate?

02j is same as late 02a. Swap 108mm cups if it has them for 100mm 02a bolt in cups. Job done. As demonstrated on F17 bad. He doubted my advice at first.

So is it that the shafts are less strong, or the wrong length, or that someone ran them at an odd angle?

Or is that much analysis too much?

the shafts on a mk4 weigh less.. so ill let you decide if they are stronger

drivers side mk4 is too long for mk3 or mk2 going widetrack using mk3 subframe

the mk3 ones have been at a odd angle on my car for 5 years with no issues..

maybe my mk4 one was a bad item or the CV joint was worn (we think it was)

Russ i never changed my cups. my old box was a late 02A, it had 100mm the same as 02j .

So there is a chance that mk3 shafts will fit straight onto my 02J?

T-Shirt, when your on about tripod, what exactly do you mean? The CV joints on mine are the tripod style, as opposed to the cylindrical type ones? This mean I will have the bigger cups?

Thanks for the replies aswell

Tripod refers to the 3 arms that connect to the driveshaft inside CV joint. Iirc they are the o rs with the bolts on tabs around the edge of the cv joint.

If you have this type, you have to remove the by undoing the 6mm Allen key in the centre of the cup and replace with late 02A 100mm cups. Then the mk3 shafts will bolt up to the cups correctly.
