Ok I'm trying to change my worm drive to fix my flickering speedo but I can not for the life of me get the bloody speedo cable out of the gearbox.
Looks as tho somebody has tried before as the round metal thing has marks all round it. It's stuck propper.
How do I get it out?

Normally just wiggle and pull...but you don't want to pull to hard incase the gear comes off and drops into the gearbox...which is not fun to find. The only secruring was the screw, but you have removbed that already.
-
can you spin/tap with hammer n drift the securing tab round 90 degree's then use that to level it up? spray a load of wd40 in round it also and it'll eventually seep inbetween
-
yeah i dont want to pull on it. iv tried getting a think screwdriver under the lip and tapping it but it dont budge.
will have to spray the sh!t out of it with WD40 and see what happens.
whats on the other side of it?

though yours look suspiciously different! infact im gonna take a stab in the dark and say your cable has been forced down through the hole & the cable doesnt actually have a collar on it.
that looks like the cog i can see in your pic - if that is the case then you just need to retract the cog through the hole and then get the correct cable and refit.
worst case, the plastic cog falls off into the gearbox and gets smashed up by the gearbox cogs. it will not jam or damage the box, and usually draining gearbox will remove all the bits floating about in the oil!
-
Inside the hole in the pic there is a metal dish that the cable goes against. If I pull the cable the skeave pulls up but the cable stays in. So there is the metal dish there.

Anybody got a pic of the speedo cable hole in the gearbox without the speedo cable in it?
-
I recently changed mine and the cog fell of in box and started jammin up every now and then in 3rd!!! As gambit said looks like the whole speedo has been smashed in to the gearbox hole :(
-
do you mean it looks like somebody has put the speedo cable in with cog but no metal bowl? how would that work as the pointy part the cog ataches to is sor of part of the bowl.
there is a metl bowl in there but when i pull the cable the sleave pulls up.
would reall help if i can see what the hole looks like withouth the bowl and cable in it so i could tell but cant find a pic on google and quite a hard one to look for.
-
ok just found this pic wich shows the hole without the cable and bowl in it. and mine defo has the bowl in still looking at that pic

Hm I don't get it. Are you saying the "bowl" which normally rests in the hole and seals it is actually inside the transmission casing? I can only kinda see the cog in your first pic...did you have the lip screwed into the transmission? Where is that lip, or did you slide it up the cable out of the way?
-
Edit:
I'll try and find a pic, definitely seen one somewhere.
But, looking through the hole, at the bottom is a little round recess where the tip of the plastic gear "slots" into, the gear rest on the gear inside the casing and spins...
If you did not have any securing on top, wouldn't there be oil spilling out everywhere? Was nothing in place on the top, just the hole?
Edit2:
Thought it was on broke...here this should help:

Whoops never seen 2nd page

yes it had a metal cap with a single bold on one side i undid and slid it up the cable.
if you look at the pic of mine you see the ring around the hole well that is raised about a quater or a mm and inside the hole about 1 & a half cm's down there is a metal base with a small hole in the middle the cable goes through.
it is now a hole deep enough to have the worm gear go into like the ones in your pic so the cap/bowl or what ever the real name for it is must be that what ou can see.
mine dont apear to have that black plastic cap on top of the metal bowl bit tho
