Can anyone help me..? My mk4 Golf GTI T started overheating last night. So i eventually got it home and today bought a new thermostat and temp sender. I put both parts on but the fan still doesnt come on...!!!!
Ive only had the car a few weeks and starting to lose faith in it......PLEASE HELP?
Or does anyone know a reliable mobile mechanic in the Romford area...?
-
ive just taken a fuse out of the fuse box and both fans run constantly. It was a 10amp fuse that was top left, 2nd in. Does anyone know what this means...?
-
To add to my confusion...i got to work this morning (i only work 15 minutes from where I live so the car doesnt overheat in that distance) and the fans were going....so i left the engine running and the car still overheated.......Im starting to think it is the dreaded head gasket.....but please someone help me and give me some advise.... :-(
-
do you get water running back into the header tank via the small top pipe when it's warm?
-
yes I do so I know the water pump is working.......
ive done a bit more research and im gonna test the fans today to see if they run at both speeds....and im leaning towards the fan module now
-
Sound a bit mad but have you thought about your thermostat?
-
ive replaced the thermostat and the temp sender...
Just had a diagnostic tool come in the post today and its throwing up error code 16501 which is the temp sender that i have replaced....im gonna take the pipe off for the water pump return to the reservoir and see if the water is pumping through......this one has stumped me
-
you might get some water comin through the return even if the waterpump is f**ked
-
you got climate or just air con? Genuine temp sender?
-
ive got climate control and i got the temp sender from VW so it is genuine part...
Are there any other tests i can do to see if the water pump has had it...?
-
did you check the thermo before fittin it
-
i didnt....how do i test it....?
-
drop it in boiling water see if it opens
-
sorry...thought you meant the temp sender switch.....
Yes i did test the thermostat in boiling water and it did open
-
did you check the return pipe to see if anythin is coming through it
-
very common for the fan module to give up if you've got climate

right, a quick update.....
I have been reading through other threads and it said another way to test the water pump is to get the car up to temperature and turn on the heaters. If they blow hot air then the pump is ok. But if they blow cold air the pump has had it...and guess what......mine was blowing cold air...think a new water pump is on the cards......
-
if the belt has not been done in a few years do that aswell while you have it off
-
just one thought: temp sender does not equal fan thermo switch.... does the fan run if contacts at the switch connector are bridged? If yes, then most likely a faulty switch.
-
yeah im gonna get the belt done as well.....
And yes the fans do run when the connections are bridged....but ironically the fans are working....think i might of been having a bit of a moment and turning off the ignition without me realising......
But i would just like to thank each and every one of you for your help and information.....Thank You
