Ok when I bought my 1985 jetta a few weeks back it came with a speedo on the boot as the one in it makes a ticking sound where you can hear the speedo cable spinning and the need is jumpy but it does tell you your speed. Was told the speedo in the boot was a decent one he hadn't got round to fitting.
Fitted it today and it's buggered by the looks of it as the needle does not sit at 0 and when I reverse rhe needle goes backwards and when I drive it don't go up.
So had to put the old noisy juddery ones back in.
What I want to no is. Do all mk2 golf speedos fit or does it have to be one from a cl model or something?
As I'm looking for a new one.

Sounds like the speedo needle has dropped below the stop needle... Whip the speedo out (6 screws) and move it above the pin...

Oh yeah it has
Ok sorted it just got swap them back over now and see if it's worked.
Iv noticed the clock don't work in this one ither so hopefully may be a fuse.
Does the clock have a fuse of its own?
-
not sure on Fuse - Check the Fusebox FAQ in the tech section...
Also check all the 3 earth's on the car are in good condition & connected.. My Mrs GTI had issues and was resolved with a new bonnet earth..

Ok now fitted the new speedo. And all is ok apart from it is still flickering. The speedo needle tells the correct speed but is flickering up and down all the time. Does it loads at low speed. The faster I go the less it flickers. WTF?

The one on my old 8V used to do that, untill a week before I sold it, when it fixed itself.
I think the problem is caused by a worn drive gear on the gearbox end of the cable.
-
So would a new cable fix it or is it gona be something inside the gearbox needs sorting pain in the arss?

Like to also know if this may be the worm gear breaking down or the clocks.
My Jetta has been doing the same too for the last year or so. At low speed very light flickering. Between 25-35 mile it flickers quite a bit, but after 40 it doesn't flicker at all. Also I always have a tick tick tick sound from behind the clocks.
Had swapped the Speedo cable few months back, that didn't sort the issue. The worm gear looked good, so didn't swap it at the time. So it could be worm gear or clocks.
Might buy a worm gear off the bay to try, only cost a few pounds and is swapped in 5 minutes.

What is warm gear and how do I change it?
-
Worm, not warm :) Worm gear, or drive... it's the plastic "gear" on the end of the speedo cable which goes into the gearbox.

There 2 (or more?) varients, one was for GTi's and the other for the rest I think. You can use either, but your speedo will not show correct speed, as one has more teeth than the other.

Ah right sweet cheers. How do I change it? Just undo the bolt in the gearbox end of the cable pull out the cable then pull out the worm gear?
-
Yep. Be careful when pulling the speedo cable out of the box, as you don't want that plastic gear catching on something and dropping into your gearbox.
The gear is held on to the cable by a little circlip, if memeory serves you just need to press it in and carefully pully on the gear and it should slide off. Don't lose thje circlip ;)
When reassembling, you should be able to see the "back" of the circlip, not the open end, through the little hole in the gear. If you don't see it then the gear isn't pushed up right.
-
To tag along from this, my new cable doesn't have a circlip and the circlip from the old cable fell into the gap between the grill and the radiator (the bonnet lock)
Can the circlips be bought from anywhere?
Already had the orange drive cog drop into the gear box and had to fish it out with a screwdriver and needle nose pliers
