My cousin is a BMW tech. He was working on a 320D that had been stolen yesterday and had been started via the OBD port. They are now having to resort to hiding the OBD port.

I did wonder when someone would steal cars like this. Even if BMW tighten the security to buy the blanks there will always be someone on the inside helping the criminals.

Even a tracker won't help much. I installed some to new Porsche's through my old job and I was never happy with them and how they worked. A theif could rip one out within 20 minutes before anyone even knew what happend.

You can't mess with the factory wiring or the warranty is void so the way they are wired are very poor.

as BMW tech and specialist, this is old news. Personally i think the biggest flaw is the way keys have gone, they are all the same shape, at least a good old fashioned key had to fit in a barrell designed only for it.

being able to clone / program keys is nothing new

thing is if the thieves really wanted your car they would break into your house and steal the keys and nobody wants the trauma of that happening its an absolute joke that such a high tech modern car can be stolen easier than a 10 year old transit

Hiding the port? What f**king good will that be. It still needs to be found for diagnostics, so it can't be 'hidden'.
