Please can you advise. The last couple of years when the snow is bad,we have left the GTI on the drive and only used the mk6 1.4 which is great in the snow no probs whatsoever.Due to a change in circumstance, this year both cars will need to be used. Can I put similar 15" steel wheels on the GTI with no issues so I can stay mobile?

You will need 16" wheels minimum to clear the brakes, I'm afraid.
205/55/16 I believe is the VW approved winter tyre size.
You should be able to pick up a cheap set of 16" or 17" wheels and get winter tyres on those.
As long as they are 6"-8" wide and ET40-50ish, 5 x 112 PCD, they should be fine.
Plenty of OEM Aldi,VW/SEAT/Skoda wheels to choose from.
-
Thanks for that info.I got a set of those snow sox the other year but haven't used them in fear of scratching my alloys.I got them when I had the mk5 for emergencies but am sh!t scared to use them.A set of 16" it is then.
-
Hi guys...
Today I ordered my GTI and I got a pair of winter wheels for free...the dealer said that they will fit around the Monza Shadows 18 inch.
I thought it was better to use smaller alloys etc etc...
Any comment...

I use 18" winter wheels/tyres.
Standard sized tyres too - 225/40/18...just proper winter compounds...and I had no problem driving in bad winters with those on.
Obviously, if you slide and hit a kerb, a smaller wheel will likely suffer less damage.
But in terms of whether 18" winter tyres work...yes they do.
-
so do people just rn steel wheels with no trims
-
Thanks....that saves me negotiating for smaller alloys

Nope...I did run anthracite powder coated 8.0" x 18" BBS CHs for winter.
Genuine obviously...not fakes
This year it'll be on anthracite powder coated 8.0" x 18" VW Racing (Team Dynamics) Pro Race 1.2s.
-
I just picked up some cheap winter tyres... will probably swap them over onto the pescaras once the weather turns a little cooler.
No reason not to run on 18" wheels other than as Ess3 said, if you hit a kerb its going to hurt a little bit more but the tyres should help keep you away anyway.

Think these would look pretty good, not sure how much ground clearance you would be looking at.

there just like the standard steels i got on mine . could you fit the mooneye things tht they sell on ebay and some centre caps maybe make them like the new new beetle steel alloy things

now that looks stunning . do you think you could make something like this for winter wheels

Will 16" fit the ED35?
I have a set of old 16" wheels (205/55/16) I had on my MKV GTI, will they fit?

As far as I know, the Ed35 has standard GTI brakes...so yes, they would fit.
(But they might look rank! )

Haha thanks, I will see if they fit. Yes they look like crap but the car will mostly hide in the garage during the winter and stay off the salty roads over here ;).
-
Think these would look pretty good, not sure how much ground clearance you would be looking at.
With 205-55-16's they would have more or less the same overall diameter as the standard 225-40-18's, so the ride height would not be effected.
-
I just got a set of 17" winter tyres and had them changed for the summer tyres on the 17" Monzas the car came with. They have been absolutely fantastic for two winters now - completely bloody marvellous. The car was like Bambi on an ice rink without them.
If I had the 18" Monza shadows I might be tempted to spring for 16" winter wheels though.
I do have a set of snow socks and they work pretty damn well. The only problem is you have to keep taking them off and on, and while they're on you can't do more than 30 mph. If you run them on tarmac, they'll wear really fast, too. And once you've used them, they're soaking and filthy. Easy to get off, but a nightmare to put back on unless you can put them through a washing machine first.
I think they're more suited to carrying in case of emergencies in an area where bad snow is unusual and doesn't warrant changing the tyres. In areas where it's cold enough all winter and snow is likely enough to warrant a tyre change, that's the way to go. Then you can just forget about it until April.
I don't think they damage the wheels or wheel arches at all though. They're not like chains in that respect.
-
I got a set of Skoda vRS 18" alloys off ebay for about £80 each. Perfect fit for my car.
I had them powdercoated anthracite, and they look reasonable enough as Winter wheels.
They've actually been on the car from Jan 2011 - April 2011 and Oct 2011 to April 2012... and never seen snow (apart from one trip to the Lecht last December!).
Waste of time so far!

Thanks for previous advice. After looking at prices for second hand winter wheels I decided to get some new ones instead, wheels, tyres balanced and delivered for £350.I tried one on today to make sure it fits.

Get some black plastic nut covers off a Caddy Van AndyG, just to tidy the look up a bit.

Get some black plastic nut covers off a Caddy Van AndyG, just to tidy the look up a bit.
You can get 'em off eBay for about £10.
I just bought a set of the hexagonal bolt covers for my VWR/TD Pro-Race 1.2 winters, for just over £10.
-
The Caddy van ones are pretty good as the nut covers and VW centre badge all come in one part and are ideal for steel wheels

Each to their own mate but there's no way I'd be driving round with these on, bad weather or not! Sorry.

Ginge,I'd sooner not have them but when it snows I literally can't get out of my street. They are only going on when snow is forecast,as soon as it clears up the monza's are going back on.

In that case fair play, I've told work if the snow is bad then come and fetch me!

I couldn't live with the looks either...but you can't argue with the performance advantage of winter tyres.
I can't get off my driveway, never mine out of the street, if the snow is bad and I leave my 19" summer wheels on.
18" BBS CH with winter tyres were my last set...18" VWR/Team Dynamics Pro-Race 1.2s for this winter.
My old man runs 16" Borbet alloys on his Mk5 GT for winter (down from 17s) and again, they don't look as good...but be worries a lot less about clipping a kerb than I do with 18s on.
-
You watch now I'll have bad weather and clip one of mine!

Now the wife has a BMW I'm going to have to use the Mk6 this winter so I think it's time to go down the winter tyres route too. I'm also going to buy a set of cheap (ish) alloys too in order to protect the Monza Shadows.
I'm sorry if this has been covered before but exactly what size 18 inch alloy do I need to buy? Despite having read previous posts on offsets and so on I still don't understand it. And there's 8, 8.5 and so on. I just want to know the exact size before I start trawling the net. I assume the tyre size will be the same as the Monza Shadows?
Any recommendations for decent winter tyres too?
-
Where is the best place to buy a new set of monza shadows?
I normally just get the tyres switched over but do like the idea of getting a new matching set of alloys.
Local VW quoted me just over £500 per wheel which seems high, also they had them down as another name not monza shadows
My current ones are scuffed so was thinking of using these for winter and anew set for summer.
ny thoughts apart from eBay?

Mr GTD is ya man for this as he finds loads of deals out there. Try the mk6 eBay section as you'll find a set of refurb end on there no doubt.

Smaller skinnier winter tyres would be better in the snow and ice than 18" low profile winter tyres. So the choice is really up to you whether you can stomach the look of the car over the winter months like that!! Hence why the OP of this thread went for 16". They are also a lot cheaper for tyres. A decent set should look all right.

From experience of running winter tyres on my last 3 cars...the size of wheels and width of wheel have less of an impact than people assume.
Once you make the swap to winter tyres, the difference between standard width winter tyres and narrower winter tyres is so small that it probably isn't a real factor.
I run 225/40/18 winters (Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme/Michelin Pilot Alpin) and notice absolutely no adverse effects compared to my fathers Golf running 16" Avon Ice Touring winter tyres in 205/50/16 (I think that's the VW suggested winter tyre size).
I can see the theoretical advantage of narrower tyres on snow/slush...but the reality is, I've noticed absolutely no difference. The winter tyre compound is what makes the difference - not the width.
It's not as if you are driving like a rally driver on a winter rally stage, is it?
Looks are subjective...but to my mind, a 18" winter wheel/tyre will always look better than a 16" winter narrow wheel & tyre...and if the performance is not significantly affected...why not run a 17" or 18"?
At the end of the day...it's the tyres that make the difference, so whether it's on 16", 17" or 18" doesn't matter...as long as you have them fitted!
-
I wasn't intending going down to 16s. 17s would have been my minimum. Presumably the tyre size would be different if I went for 17s?
-

Standard GTI tyre size of 225/45/17 would work just fine.
-
Why not go for some standard 17" monza's? There will be plenty of genuine ones around plus they'll look good on the car and are fairly cheap to refurb.

This is what I have, kept a set from a previous MK5 with nearly new SP Sports, I only intend swapping them to protect my Shadows as I'd be gutted if I damaged one.

I agree re Ess_Three's point.
I ran Vredstein Wintrac Xtremes on a set of 18" alloys last year and they performed brilliantly in the snow and ice but also in the colder days, grip was noticeably improved.
I felt dropping to 17s or 16s would alter the look of the car too much for what is effectively a 6 month period of time.
I plan to swap mine early next month and theyll stay on until the end of March/April.
-
Essthree would the contact area not be a different shape with narrower tyres (tyre pressures, car weight, axle loads all been equal)
-
I had a set of 225-45-17's Hankook Ice Bears on my Passats standard wheels last year. I didn't really get chance to try them in the snow, but even on cold, greasy winter B roads, they felt so much secure than the Michelin PS3's that had come off. Well worth having in my opinion.
I have just bought a set of very cheap Audi S line wheels, that are away being refurbed and powder coated anthracite at the moment. The winter tyres will be going on them, which will make swapping from summer to winter tyres much easier.
-
Essthree would the contact area not be a different shape with narrower tyres (tyre pressures, car weight, axle loads all been equal)
Yeah, I'd expect so...especially so with the narrower tyre.
Good for cutting through slush, the flipside being you have less of the proper cold temperature rubber compound on the road.

From what I remember which may be incorrect, if weight, pressure are kept the same (everything been equal) its only the shape of the contact patch that changes shape not amount of rubber in contact.

I believe that's the case. However, the tyre pressures between different widths.diameters differs...so potentially this does have an impact?
I have certainly never noticed any adverse affects to running 225 wide winter tyres, so long as the compound & tread pattern is formulated for the cold weather/snow.
What I do know, is my 225 wide Goodyear F1s are lethal below 5 degrees C - there is just no grip.
ANY winter tyre is an improvement after that.
-
Spoke to dealer today and he was recommending 17 x 8 or 17 x 7 1/2s on my car. Rubber recommendation would be 215/45, either Conti or Vredeestein Wintracs although the reviews I've read seem to point to Goodyear UltraGrip 8s being very very good.
Does all the above seem a reasonable compromise?
-

Yup...sounds good.
For a 215 wide tyre I'd be tempted to go for a 7.5" wide wheel...an OEM wheel would fit the bill there.
I know the Conti winters won a recent tyre test, I've used the Vredesteins and they are very good, and a friend runs the Goodyears...they are also very good.
I doubt you'll be unhappy with any mix of the above.

Nice one Ess - now just to find an alloy I can live with for 2 or three months. Fancy a change so not going to go for 17 inch Monzas. There are loads and loads to choose from so a trawl on the net beckons!!!

check out mytyres
You can spec 17 or 18 inch alloys from a choice and then add your choice of winter tyres. Came to £900 all in, fitted, balced and delivered with vredestein wintracs - 225/40/18.
I spent ages trawling ebay but did not want to be lumbered with any dodgy repairs or even dodgier copies.
I have vredetein wintracs on my ML in the winter and they are truly superb.
-
I'd looked on mytyres Spartacus but hadn't spotted they did the wheels too. Just had a look and they do the wheel I was looking at anyway at another dealer. £954 with a set of Goodyear 8s on which get brilliant reviews. And should last two or three winters too.
-
i ran winters on the sh!tty for the city last year and became a monster convert, its lack of power and 14" steelies made it the weapon of choice
mk6 will be tucked away for winter but picking up a spare set of alloys for the pirelli tomorrow which will be running oem 18s on some winter rubber for mrs w
-
I just went online and found some used winter tyres with 5mm of tread all round. Got them in 225/40/18 so will be fitting straight onto my pescaras as they are all foobarred anyway
£190 for 4 delivered anyone
-
Depends what make the winter tyres were you got whether it was a bargain or not as mytyres are doing that size brand new for £60 which is not bad for brand new, sh!tty make though.
I'm always dubious about 2nd hand tyres. I'd hate to be in dead mans shoes so to speak

Bridgestone blizzaks... and although the different between summer and winter tyres is huge. The difference between most of them is not that great  (unless of course you are talking about some totally crap made up named ones).

Think I've narrowed it down to a set of Dezent REs with Conti 830s on. Only choice now is 215/45/17s or 225/45/17s. Although I'd sort of decided on the 215s after discussions earlier in this thread, my local dealer was saying to stick to the original 225 fitting as the 215s would look a bit lost and "gappy". There seems to be about £20 difference between 215 and 225 tyres so should I be £80 bothered about how it looks for a couple of months?

Wouldn't the smaller wheel with lower profile tyres affect the speedo?

Yeah...they would.
Personally, I'd stick to 225/45/17.

Might not have been such a bargain
-

Might not have been such a bargain
I believe the legal minimum is the same as any other tyre - 1.6mm.
But, they are no use when the tread gets low (below 3mm) as the tread blocks need to squirm about to work...and below that, they don't.
In all honesty, ANY road tyre below 3mm is next to useless...especially in the wet.
-
Regarding affecting the speedo,I have just measured the 16" winter wheel edge of tyre to edge of tyre against the monza edge of tyre to edge of tyre. They are both 24.5 inch so the speedo will be unaffected.
-
http://www.alloywheels.com/Tyre_Calculator has a calculator to tell you if the speed will be affected, if its any help.

We all buy second hand tyres when we buy second hand cars and don't give it a thought.

im bidding on some EOS wheels to put on my wifes altea and i will use her 16"s for my GTI over the winter months. they need a refurb but new in the dealers would be rep £1400.
i was actually toying with the idea of permanently dropping to 17" on my GTI to improve ride and reduce rattles.
what tyre speed and load rating is recommended for the GTI 16" or 17" winter tyres?
-
shameless plug....

-
Mkviken
Does the eos not have a different offset like the scirrocco and wider 235/45/18 tyres or does the altea as well?
When the snow comes my mk6 will get left in the garage as the front is.far too low to get out the street or village.
I will be using my mk1 Leon who's wheels I will change to my second set of oem alloys fitted with brand new 205/55/16 nankang sv2 for a total wheel+tyre package cost of £299.37
If I don't make it into work I don't get paid so these will probably pay for themselfs over the next few months/years.
-
Well, I'm finally getting round to having some winter tyres fitted at the weekend, just in time for the cold snap. Conti 830s but I've had to put them on the 18 inch Monza Shas cos I can't afford to buy a new et of alloys at the moment.
Never had winter tyres before - other than the obvious better grip in ice and snow will I notice anything different about the drive?
-
Today picked up my 17 inch Audi alloys...the different with my 18 inch is quite noticable...
The advice was go smaller....is there any truth in that
Anyway I do like my alloys

They do feel a little bit squirmy on dry roads with the tread blocks moving about. What surprised me was how quiet they are.
I've recently picked these up from being refurbed and then had my winter tyres fitted today.

They are genuine Audi 17" S line wheels. ET43, so will fit on either my Golf or Passat. I just need to finish painting the center caps, then they'll go on. However, I quite like them the way they are, so may fit them with the small center caps like the Golf has and black bolt covers.

Yeah my dealer saw that there were no bolt covers...he ordered the straight away...how nice

So who's still got there winter tyres on?
I took mine off my old Passat and put the original wheels back on to sell it an the end of last month. When I picked up my new Passat, I thought "nah, I'm not going to need winters on this until October at the earliest" so cleaned them up and stored them away in the garage.
I haven't needed to go anywhere today, so none of the cars have been out in the snow, but I wonder how many others hand changed back to summer tyres only to get caught out?

Mine are still fitted. Had planned to do them this weekend ready for Easter but I guess I'll wait and see. Please I hadn't changed them over

Hadn't bought any in the first place.

Still got mine on.
Starting snowing here on Thursday night and hasn't stopped since
I had to clear a three foot snow drift from the garage door to get the car out.
I live out in the country and I have a 300m steep winding lane to the house.
I would be house bound without them.
I might just keep them on, less road noise, better fuel consumption and brilliant grip in the wet. (17's)

Still got mine on. But its never been above 4 degrees for months on my commute and icy for weeks.
-
Mine will be on until mid April at least!

Snap!
I thought about swapping back 2-3 weeks ago...then the snow came back.
I shall re-assess on the 1st April now.

still rocking the winters on the 500TA but they need to come off as car goes up for sale next week
having been caught a few weeks ago in the chaos of motorways in Kent and Sussex in the 35 i'd have happily swapped it for the 500 on winters

When the morning and evening commutes are abover 7 degrees all week I'll swap them back, so far haven't even been close!
