Title: Mk2 Bumpers
Post by: richie2480 on 09 September 2012, 09:20
Hi all,  My rear bumper is badly faded. I've tried all the recommended remodies, even the heat gun, whcih worked on some parts and made other bits look more pronounced. I'm looking at getting a replacement and have seen VW Heritage are selling replacement bumpers. Has anyone bought them and what is the verdict? Cost isn't a problem it's quality I am worried about.

Cos they look sh1t!

Rich,

The VW Heritage bumpers are what is on mine.  The only difference is that they don't have the seam that the OE ones have, and they need a little bit of fettling to get to fit 100%.  Have a gander at mine at GTi Fest next month.

Heritage have the best copies and Lewy's looks nice.

If your texture is mint and the heatgun trick wont work then degrease the texture, some plastic primer and matt black paint.
Satin black doesnt match well unless you paint all the trim (ball ache)

You do need to degrease the texture before you apply any  trim care or use a heatgun.

A blow torch was better than the heatgun but be careful as you can stain the plastic and have patchy areas if you have trim care on the texture.

Have you tried shoe polish?
Works a treat on mine and does last a long time.

Have you tried heel spray, like for high heeled shoes? Its the closest I've found to matching the original plastic colour.

Peanut butter is a classic but your always going to need to do it. If it were me buy new like the above chaps have said.
