Title: red oil lamp flashing and buzzer 1.8t AGU
Post by: 1.8t.jim on 08 September 2012, 15:23
recently serviced my car and put in 5w 40 fully synthetic oil and a new K&N oil filter, and earlier i had a red oil lamp flashing saying low oil, i checked oil after 15 mins cool down and it was half way on dipstick ?? so topped it up a littlle bit to full, i rang a friend who is a vw mechanic, and he told me i shouldnt use 5w 40 fully synthetic oil as it gets to thin once warm and sets off the sensor ? but ive topped up now and took it on a test drive and it seems ok ?  the fans arnt running to say the engine is overheating or anything ? got a little bit of power loss when oil light came on i dont no if this means the engine went into safe mode ? can anybody help me please

you don't have a low oil level warning, you have a low pressure warning

As Wazzzer said it's an oil PRESSURE warning light, which means either the switch has failed or your oil pump.

Your mechanic saying don't use 5w40 - stay clear of him when it comes to oil, he has clearly no idea....

Low oil pressure seems to be caused by a blocked pick up pipe (generally anyway).

yep pick up pipe is worth replacing, doesn't cost much in comparison to a new engine. Might be worth replacing the switch too

When this happened to me it was the pick up pipe! Def worth changing, I had to get another engine because I didn't realise what it was :(

Why change oil pump? It's gonna be pick up pipe and 540 is fine iWork for vw and it's what most cars get

i just think for the sake of £29 for the pump i might aswell just change the pump whilst im under the car, ive got the sensor and pump ordered now anyway might also change my sump as that looks in a sorry banged up state and it looks like its been patched a few times, i just hope i havent done any damage to my engine, i was literally around the corner from my house when oil light came on and i took it straight home and parked it up and checked oil (which was ok)  its a gd job i wasnt on a long run out, i would of definatly screwed my engine then  does anybody know if tghis sort of problem has damaged my engine ?

I still wouldn't bother with pump mate, my oil light came on at 120 when the pick up pipe blocked up sO you should be ok, Diped clutch in and slowed right down saved it I think haha wouldn't bother with sensor either, If your fitting non gen parts, I'd rather have a 10 year old genuine oil pump than a new non genuine, new sump, oil change new pick up pipe from vw about 10 quid is all I'd do

hi matey, its paul who bought the exhaust

as others have said, i wouldnt bother with the pump, it will be the pick up pipe. there about £14 from vw. get yourself the proper oil and filter from vw/tps too.

if you were to buy i pump, i would only buy from vw/tps. the orininal ones lasted 12 years....

VW / Audi sludge problems
While the the 1.8T engines in Audi A4's, Audi TT, VW Passat, Jetta, Golf, New Bettle, are all very prone to sludge build-up, Audi/VW does not have an extended warranty for them from the factory. The factory warranty is 4 year/50,000 miles but it can be extended if purchased.
Although Audi/VW now has 10,000 mile service intervals, oil changes can be done between "services", and should be done if the vehicle is driven in heavy traffic, offroad, and non-highway use. Also, Audi/ VW will only warrant an engine if the customer has proof of all their oil changes. As of 2004 I belive all 1.8T engines must use synthetic oil.
So if you own one of these sludge-prone engines, what can you do? Obviously, Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) states that you use only VW/Audi recommended oil. You should also keep up on your oil changes, making them more frequent if you drive hard or haul a lot of cargo. The most important thing for the VW or Audi owner is this: if the oil light comes on and beeps the high pitch beep that almost everyone ignores, pull over and shut the engine down immediately. Many VAG engines can be saved by this procedure. Have the vehicled towed to a VAG dealer. Their standard procedure is to inspect the cam bearings; if they're not scored, the oil pan will be removed and cleaned out and all the crankcase breather hoses and the oil pickup tube will be replaced. They'll do an oil pressure test with a mechanical gauge, and hopefully will also replace the turbo lines. Finally, the turbo will be checked for bearing free-play. The VAG turbos run really hot even with proper oil and coolant supply - that's why you need a good quality synthetic in them.
