Title: Cheap Dampers

Guys,

The dampers on my 1991 GTi 8V seem shot to me. I don't want to spend a fortune on adjustables, what is the least I can get away with for some decent quality replacement dampers?

I have seen some Bilsteins at £100 a pair, surely these would be an improvement? or do you have other suggestions? I have also seen Konis at £200 a pair, are they significantly better?

Suggestions greatly appreciated... also is changing them fairly simple? just need to buy a spring compressor right?

eurocarparts bilsteins will do the job if looking cheapy. and use the 25% off voucher also

general rule of thumb is...the more they cost the better they are!

Or go for Sachs or Boge gas units, they are good quality

I've used sach ones before no issues ass they are usually what come on most Volkswagen's from factory (like on my mk4).
But Bilsteins are often a good price at ECP. If not try VeeDubMachine, often have some good offers even though just German quality.

I have found with shocks it seems to be buy cheap, buy twice! I would save up for some good quality shocks unless its dangerously bad!

I think there's a couple of sides to this:

1. Cheap autofactor struts to replace original dampers: fine
2. CHeap coilovers for those wanting to slam their car: not fine

thanks Fellas...

I assume the originals are shot since the car is 20+ years old and has 82000 on the clock.. but I am not hugely familiar with MK2s so perhaps not? it feels like it has little damping on the move and when pushing it up and down at a standstill it seems to have little rebound. it is certainly not a must have, but if a significant improvement I will go for it..
