Hi everyone,
Could anyone point me in the right direction for a 1985 mk2 gti 8v steering column, as my car failed its m.o.t. on this, how much will it cost, fitting parts etc, also where on earth do i find a good one? Many thanks for any help you can give me,Im new to this forum so again any help much appreciated

hey.. where are u based?? and you should be able to get one froma scrappy m8 but let me know ur location and i shall see if i can help resolve your issue
-
Scrappy is going to be the best bet, unless you want to pay uber amounts of money for a new vag one, (if they even still supply them)
Best bet is to ring around all the ones local to you and see what you can get.

Are you sure it's the column that's the problem? The fixing bolts often work loose, enabling you to rock the wheel up and down quite alarmingly.
For safety/anti-theft reasons some of the fixing bolts are anti-tamper types than don't have a nut/hex socket to tighten them. in my experience these can work loose, and you can undo them with your fingers. However, you can't tighten them up properly (snap off heads), so get some hex-headed replacements from the scrappy (any old Polo etc. will do as well as Golfs) and tighten that column down!

I second that point about the bolts. I tried to tighten mine as it was wobbly and the bolt snapped. It wont be a problem unless i need to take the steering columb off which hopefully i wont.

Oh ok guys, I'll have a look at them today, all I know is that one of its m.o.t fail points was I quote " roughness in steering column" should be quite easy then
-
Yeah easy to sort out. If you take the under tray off and look up you will see the two bolt that hold the steering colum up. You can get to them easy with a socket extension bar. While your there also check the allen key bolt on the ingition barrel bit. To get to that take off the plastic cover on the underside of the ignition barrel and you will see it.
-
Cool, is this the likely cause of the roughness then? just curious.I have a crack at it in a while it will give my neighbours something to smile listen to me swearing my head off as I bang my head etc
-
Right, Ive checked the bolts and they're fine, not loose at all, the allen key bolt it also tight,in fact the whole column wasn't loose at all, so don't realy know where I stand with this, Im not sure if its rough as the m.o.t. says it is!! Im stuck!!
-
Is there a reason for the suposed roughness other than the bolts possibly being loose (which they arnt). Do I really need to go out and buy a new column?

Hi
I live near a real good VW scrapper (floods of PM's!) in Huddersfield Yorkshire so if you need a new column or can't track any parts down let me know and i can get it and post it to you. All part o' the service!

Hi Mate, thats the best news Ive had all week, I will e-mail you off site about the cars needs and we'll take it from there, I live fairly close to you in Wilmslow so could actually come and collect.Speak to you soon mate
-
Probably the top bearing knackered which is integral to the alloy steering lock assembly(fairly easy job to do)
-
Ok, that sounds better, If I get a new steering column that should sort it right? I hope theyre easy to fit.............

I've just had a thought and,I know it may sound daft (and probably isn't the case )....but does the steering feel rough or does it just sound rough as it might just be the horn slip ring that is worn as they can make a horrid graunchy noise ??
-
It really is an odd thing, it feels a little rough but I mean a tiny bit, there are noises when I turn the wheel but im really not sure if thats just causes by the stoney road its parked on and the fact that its gona be a little rough when turning the wheel whilst not mooving, could it in fact be the steering rack and not the column?Im very confused sorry mate

"Roughness in steering coloumn" sounds a bit vague and doesn't give a lot of clues as to what is up. The only way you'll get roughness is that either or both of the top or bottom coloumn bearings have gone. I would be inclined to put the front up on stands so you can turn the steering lock to lock and feel for play and roughness as you do so.
Also if the bolt were loose then in theory you should have an "excessive play in coloumn top bearing" fail on your sheet which you haven't, its easy enough to check , remove the two screws that hold the lower shroud on and feeling to the left of the coloumn and up under the dash you'll find an allen key bolt, this is what holds the lock housing to the lower coloumn, rock the wheel and if the bolt is loose the lock section will move slightly, try doing up the bolt to make sure its tight.
The horn ring being noisy wont matter as its not a fail point, if the top bearing, which is part of the lock housing, has gone then you should be able to tell by holding the steering wheel top and bottom and moving your hands back and forth, roughness would indicate a bearing going so in theory you should also have play in it.
The good thing is that your car is a '85 model, these dont have the steering wheel spacer and makes removing the lock housing a darn sight easier. The bearing in the lock housing on mine was well worn and got an advisory on the MOT, luckily I managed to get a brand new one of ebay for next to nothing, VW quoted me £20.17 + VAT for a new one. I looked on my ETKA  and its the same part for your car. ÂÂÂ
part number is 155 905 851
