Title: Mk3 Front Seats
Post by: ss2115 on 05 September 2012, 08:35
My daughter has asked if I can improve her tatty front seats in her 1997 Mk3 5 door.

Being relatively new to Golf ownership, I thought I'd ask on this forum if any of the other model Golf seats will fit -same bolt pattern, same bolt sizes, seat belts etc.
Then I thought I'd look on eBay and around the wreckers.

So will later model Golf years fit, or should I only look for MK3's, or perhaps have these recovered instead? (Trimmers are so expensive though).

Stick with mk3 seats,as far as I know others (mk2) need custom subframes...

Colour concept seats are nice but come at a higher price

What about the next model - Mk4? 1998 to about 2004 or so I believe.

I have a lovely set of GL seats I need gone ASAP
Make me an offer and you will be able to fit them straight in

As for fitting them you push the seat fully forward and remove a trim on the centre side of the seat and a small trim tht goes over the seat rails
Then push the seat fully back and you'll see squeeze pin, remove this and push seat out off the rails and TADA!
To fit just reverse the above :)

mk4 seats can be fitted but you'll either need to modify the floor runners and ratchet adjuster on the mk3 floor pan or weld mk3 seat subframes onto the new mk4 seat bases.
The rears also fit but require the hinges to be moved over and the rear clasping loops to be relocated / modified.

if she aint bothered about comfort for the front then go for bucket seats (corbeau) think ive spelt it right. Or try anniversary seats with red seat belts. Or mulberry (purple) heated leather seats from a vr6 highline. Loads options available all mk3 seats are straight fit.

Try find some seats from a GL - my car had done well over 200,000 miles and the seats were still pretty much immaculate (no tears, nothing dropped through, often with seat heating - well maybe not in Aussieland, ...)

Would have swapped mine to the new car but would have been silly as the old one was a LHD and current one's a RHD. Silly how I can still miss this old car that needed TLC every other month.

Good morning.
Thanks everyone for some terrific help.
It sounds defintely that it will be easier to stick to Mk3 seats, so I'll start looking in ernest for those. Although leather is of course very nice, its not so good in Australia in the summer. Very hot after the cars been locked at the beach for a while, and also sticks to the skin in hot weather. And we're talking about a 17yo and her friends who all like to show a lot of skin.
I have a supplier in Leeds so i could probably get seats sent to me from the UK if I had to, but of course I would need to exhaust local sources first before getting to that point. And daughter needs to approve the seat pattern first, because if we change she wants something better than the dull grey thats in there now.
Thanks again.
