Title: VW GOLF MK4 00-04 1.8T 20V COLD RAM AIR INDUCTION KIT = HELP??!
Post by: Gary022 on 03 September 2012, 20:41
Just bought this off of ebay for £39 ( £9) postage.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK4-00-04-1-8T-20V-COLD-RAM-AIR-INDUCTION-KIT-/350473916851?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5199df91b3

once receiving it and unpackaging it i couldnt wait to go give it a go and fit it.

but as soon as the bonet was lifted i realised something was wrong as there is surely no way on earth it can fit my AUM 2002 1.8t Golf Gti.

the brackets on the pipe are in the wrong place , the formed bends on the pipework are completely wrong and it also seems too long.

it just seems physically impossible to fit and must not be made for the purpose. it also doesnt look of any similar shape to other CAI on the market for this car.

has anyone managed to fit this or is it just cheap rubbish for sale that is of no fit for purpose what so ever.

it does fit mate the cone filter sits behind the wheel arch liner some say that it sits to low and is prone to sucking up water on heavily rainy days others say they are fine either way i would cut the pipe down by 2 inches but before you even contemplate doing anything like that you need to work out how it fits

ill take some photos of it when i get my phone back , i do understand there meant to be pretty low down and the idea is for them to be in the wheel arch but the angles and brackets just seem wrong.

fitted mine yesterday. It will fit believe me. Theres a bracket fpr the snorkel air intake which is located on the back of the headlight. This comes off and you can feed the pipe through to the arch. There should be 2 holes in the chassis which you can bolt the bracket on to. You may have to remove one of your horns though!

Also, when you get yours fitted let me know how loud the recirv valve is. Mines extremely loud! Sounds like a dump valve. Anyone think its broken/cracked?

if it's like the one on the picture, they fit just fine.

easiest way to get it in is to remove the battery and battery tray totally, then it'll just slip in easily.

the end with the tab on goes down behind the headlight, and the tab goes under the chassis rail then bolts up with the rubber bobbin supplied, then the other end of the pipe should sit pretty much bang in line with your MAF, joined up with the coupler supplied.

Pretty much everyone with a 1.8T has fitted one of these kits when they first owned the car.

Dubber: loud recirc is totally normal with these fitted, so long as it's a woosh and not a chatter/flutter

Cheers for the photos james. i can see how you've just managed to squeeze the filter down the side of the battery , hopefully mine fits there aswell.

still pretty lost with what half the stuff that came in the kit does like the smaller filter and the tubing but am hoping it will become clearer once i get the old stripped out.

despite it being a cheapo ebay kit it would have been nice to have some basic instructions. even chinese might have been helpful .

atleast im more confident it will fit now

i like the look of it cut down, i have mine full length but now tempted to do what you have done, is it the same standard filter on it that comes with the kit?

Heres what am looking at under the bonet.

i can see now removing the old air box , old cold air tube and battery case cover that the cone should fit nicely down there cut or not.

the thing that is confusing me is this rippled pipe coming off the current air box. Is it some sort of breather pipe?
( havent bought a haynes yet).

There is smaller filter given with the kit and a length of rubber of tubing ( photo'd below)... the mystery tubing lol. is that to replace it?

(this probably isnt made up correctly , just threw parts together so it would stand better for a photo , im sure you can get the idea of what came in the kit though)

Looking at other peoples cold air feeds they dont have it at all but could this be down to the AGU and AUM engines?

"denni"  Its a different filter. I didnt like the cheap filter that came with it, they sell new for £9.99 on ebay. I still have the other half and a spare 70mm silicon joiner .So i can still run the filter down to the bumper. But it didnt sound as good or go as good down there.  :undecided:

Its not hard once airbox is removed. I loosened the battery and slide it over a bit .Placed alloy tube down by battery and connected it to maf .Then get under the car and put airfilter on it.

"james2"  , does the original wider £9.99 air filter you get with the kit fit in the gap where u have or have u got to buy a different thinner cone to squeeze it in?

I found a second hand /new never fitted one on ebay £35  you need one thats not straight ,offset so it looks straight .Your is to wide on the neck or base and would point towards the wheel arch. Mine a JR french filter. I looked it up on there site and i think its rated upto 250 bhp, but i cant read french

ah ok , so the standard one is too big to cut it down and you need a cone with a kick on it so it looks straight.

think ive got you now , lucky you replied because i had almost bought a thinner strain cone filter which wouldnt have worked lol

found a 20 degree angled k and n filter for £31 , think ill just get that.

http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=SN-2620

hopefully that does the trick once i cut down the pipe.

now all i need to work out is what im doing with what i think is the oil breather.

It looks small ,need to find one that can handle 200bhp, or more if your modding your car.The tiny filters for the pipe you pointed out on you picture. I dont have one on my engine.

bit late now seeing as ive bought it lol , its 18mm thinner in width than yours but 12mm longer in length so if size is anything to go buy i hope its pretty close.

Final Part of the install to work out is the nipple on the cold pipe and the hose.

ive worked out the small filter fits on the old oil breather but that doesnt explain what the silicone hose is for or the nipple.

any ideas lads before i start the install?

Just off the phone to k and n after I realised this morning it's made for snowmobiles. Turns out if my car is non turbo it handles 190 odd but if I'm turboed it can work up to 300 odd bhp so it should work out alright :)
