Latest conversion is something a little different so thought id do a build thread on here
Its a 1994 Golf GL Estate with a 2.0 8v lump. Automatic gearbox.. Only done 74K miles 2 owners from new
Iv not seen another mk3 20VT so its a interesting one.
The customer has told me the engine needs to be all black. So we are moving away from my trade mark OEM finish on the engine in favour of Satin black.. Rest of the install is going to be keeping the OEM vibe tho
Engine we are using is donated from a Audi TT and was then installed in a Audi A3. It is a 180 BHP unit with K03s Turbo
here are the plans for it
full strip and rebuild inc painted parts in black
Forged Conrods
ARP bolts
all new Gaskets and seals etc
Full Turbo Rebuild and Hybrid
Full 2.5" Exhaust system Including custom downpipe and no Cat
Mk3 GTI ABF gearbox and flywheel
Golf mk3 ABF Pedal box
Golf Mk3 ABF clocks
Audi TT ECU / Looms
Golf mk3 GTI 288mm brakes
golf mk4 rear callipers
Coilovers
MK3 BBS solitude rims, painted Black
Aiming for around the 250 Bhp mark to start with
only just started this, a couple of pics to get us going
(http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/8666/imagekugt.jpg)
Removing from the A3, next to it is the MK3 thats donating the gearbox, flywheel, engine mount brackets along with Brakes etc

This should be a proper Q car by the time your finished. I'd love something like this!
-
turbo wagon! yay! gonna be awesome
why not make it rear wheel drive as well !
-
I've been contemplating a mk3 wagon TDI with big boost for ages now, I think they look wicked once slammed especially in storm grey.
Look forward to seeing this come along.
-
Will be watching this with interest, i've been looking at mk3 wagons for a while now to replace the missus crappy pug 206..
-
it is quite hard to find a good example wagon.. this one comes with no rust.. very hard to find indeed looked at loads and the good ones were selling as soon as they were listed
we missed out on a couple of Late Registered ones (year 1999 T place etc)

S & T reg cars are definitely the ones to be snapping up but yeah they really do go quickly, especially the derv ones.
-
looks like its gona be a cool one.
Managed to get my wagon for £500 T & T which is an R reg 1.9TDI,but you can tell it's a £500 car!
-
Mk3 wagons can be pretty cool, should be a nice Q car when done... Love the TD engines got one for my caddy project...
-
As it was when I collected it...

This is making for one cool ass build! I have contemplated buying a mk3 wagon a few times as those and the cabs are the only mk3 variants I haven't owned. I'll definitely be watching this one :)
-
Good progress, remember I removed an auto box out an Audi. Took it off the lift as can move manual boxes no prob's, but auto was like it was bolted to the floor
-
Yea the auti box was HUGE and massivly heavy.. as was the 6 speed quattro box from the 1.8T (make no wonder R32. S3, TT etc are so slow out the box carrying all that weight!
anyhow, more work done tonight (just got home)
Painted most parts now apart from Gearbox (that is next on list)
Satin black was the choice by the owner so thats iv done
Alternator was stripped right down and rebuilt after paint, did the centre strip silver, rest Satin black (Exact reverse of the colours used on the one in F17BAD)

Great progress so far dude! I look forward to seeing more updates :)
-
Quick progress on this, did that Caddy get finished? I lost sight of that one...
-
Caddy was finished yonks ago, I refined the Intercooler pipe work route before we finishe it
The owner then ripped out the engine so he could paint the bay back original shell Colour (always changing his mind on colors) :rolleyes:and asked me to wire it back up which I did
It's now in a bodyshop having other work done and should be on the road property after that
-
Yeah I lost touch with the thread, is it up to date, might have a look if it's still on here?
-
I would be interested in having a look at the caddy as well!
-

ARP Con rod Bolts are a must as this is the most stressed bolt in the entire engine of a car
(http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/2156/imageyrf.jpg)
On this install, ZRP Con rods from TSR were chosen
(http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/4707/imagewetz.jpg)

Looking great bud! My gearbox looked like that as well. It's such a mission cleaning and prepping engine parts, but so rewarding when its all done :)
-
Not much left to do on this now
just need to have a new oil return line made up (from turbo to sump) as we don't like the OEM one due to been close to driveshaft
Gear linkage to fit, then fit the Exhaust and modify the fan cowling to suit the Intercooler

looking good!!
has it got discs all round? a lot of car to stop when its bobbing along..
-
yeah mate it will have GTI mk3 brakes on the rear with MK4 callipers
on the front it will be running the 288 set up that was on the Audi A3 1.8T donor car
Custom braided lines all round
-
looks awesome
-
Cool project. Nice quality work. What intercooler did you use?
-
brad i would use flat sheet when you do your sumps in future, cheaper and checker board is for grip, if the sump is gonna hit the floor you want it to skid! i suppose they will get ground off anyway
-
they cope well actually, ill keep it in mind tho
-
Hi mate, could you do me a favour and have a look at the part no for the top breather hose in this pic? Blue Y piece.
Cheers.
-
progess is going well. did you hybrid the turb yourself or get someone else to do it? also the loom, did you hybrid that yourself or not? pm me a price on the loom please.
keep it going mate your doing pretty good
-
Josh ill get u a part number mate
Sharki, my mate owns turbo clinic in leeds. He did the hybrid and the balancing etc
Ben machined the housing tho
I can sort the loom,
Would only really wanna do it if I was to carry out the full conversion tbh
If not I'd charge for loom and ECU decode and the price would be £300 plus postage costs
I'd need looms from donor and your car
Labour price for full conversion starts at 1200 that's including looms splicing and ECU decode etc
-
That's a good price to be honest
-
Cheers matey,
Finishing up on the conversion of this Estate this weekend.
just brakes to do, coilovers to fit. and the intercooler pipework to refinish in its final coat of paint
Then will need to be Re mapped
-
Any updates on this
-
awesome work
do like sleeper cars like this, certainly wouldn't expect a mk3 estate to have 250bhp at the lights
-
will update properly later, but yeap its alive and alll running
their is a idle issue with it which was present on the engine when it was in the Audi donor car before we installed it, so iv just to sort this now
then its all good
looks ace
pics to follow
-
Can't wait to see some more pics of this :)
-
Here is the car in one piece awaiting last few alterations which ill update on here soon
will then be subject to full valet and final polish and clean of the engine and bay area

The bay looks awesome!
-
That. Is. Awesome.
-
Perfect fit..
-
YES! I still need one of these in my life. Love the satin black finish to the bay as well. :afro:
-
Cheers guys, really happy with the finish too, everything is finished in the satin black, Gearbox etc all matches up. even the Intercooler and all intercooler charge pipes are satin
-
question;
what did you have to swap on the rear to put discs on? is the conversion any different to a hatchback?
-
Like that bud. Its not the car or the engine, I just love your way of doing it all. Always look like a professional job :afro:
Need you to do my tidy my engine and bay, I just don't have the patience :D
-
Credit where it is due, thats the best install of an AGU or similar i have seen, probly helps theres no chrome charge pipes and blue hose!
-
Thanks for positive feedback on the conversion
Lazy, bring it to Leeds when we have the new unit
Regards to rear breaks, we left the estates axle on the car but used the rear hubs, and handbrake cables from a mk3 16v
It also uses the mk3 16v rear discs, but we updated to calipers to the better mk4 items
It also has braided hoses all round
The rear axle is different to the hatch version.
-
ta very much fella :) time to get shopping i think :)
keep up with the awesomeness please :)
-
AWESOME work as usual! :afro:
-

Hey Brad, what's the deal with the mk4 caliper swap? Is everything a direct fit? I want to refurb and paint my calipers before to long, so I might as well do the mk4 upgrade instead of spending time on my original calipers :)
-
Mk4 rear calipers bolt straight onto the mk3 stub axle but you'll need the conversion hoses as the mk4 calipers have banjo fittings. The mk4 brakes arent anymore powerful but do benefit from been made from alloy which means less unsprung weight and they also tend to seize up less often as a bonus.
-
Cool, I'll keep my eye out for a pair then :)
-
As already said, the mk4 rear caliper swap is a must in my opinion
I get the lines made up by a company called Hel
U use the mk3 carriers, in only need the mk4 caliper it fits as tho it was made to fit
-
Awesome, It's on my list :)
-

What are the MK4 calipers like?
Only experience with them is one totally seized and one bleed nipple thread wrecked but the MK4 I have is a POS. Also they aren't very strong. Had two calipers but only one cable so may have to do the other side.
Just wondering for my MK3 and wondering if there is still something off with the MK4. Cheers :)
-
The mk2 and MK3 rear calipers are bab their sieze for fun
the mk4 items (well we say mk4 but they are still used on the mk6, audi, seat , skoda etc) are aluminium so will not ever seize
im not sure what issues your having? but they are the best calipers for the rear
-
You saying the rear mk4 caliper never seize? Come along to the mk4 section and read the seized caliper threads
Top install :afro: Looks like it just came out the factory!!!
-

cheers dude
the carriers on the mk4 may well seize, they are afterall just the same crap metal as the ones on the mk3 where the pins seize
as far as im aware iv never had any issue with the mk4 calipers and iv a set on my mk3 and we have owned 3 mk4's
either way, they are a huge improvement over the older types found on earlier golfs etc
-
on the flip side I've never had a mk2 caliper seize on me out of 6 cars, but my only mk4 has a seized rear at the moment  the corrado ones used to seize in the winter but the cables were f**ked and iced up
light is good though :afro:
-
Great work again...did you use primer before you satin blacked everything?
-
Woa, awesome work brad! Very impressed, love the fact all your builds are how they should leave the factory :)
A few questions i've got for you bud;
How did you route your custom oil return line, i'm in need of a new one for my F23 are you able to get me one made up?
What do you think to the ZRP rods over IE ones? Seem a very reasonable price!
How come you used the ABF gearbox, don't they top out at like 120?
Think that's all..
-
hi matey
on both mine and thia car the oil return lines had to be made up
my black golf is running a Audi RS2 blower, i had them made up in leeds but i already had the correct end fittings, on mine i had thse bored out as i didnt think they were big enough
ZRP rods are really good mate, this was the customers decision. I have the IE in mine and TBH they look nearly the same in quality, both come qith ARP bolts, go for it
Again it was the customers choice of box too, but i used to have the abf box in mine and did close to 150 MPH
im not a fan of the diesel boxes.
the mk4 GTI box i have now is same ratios as ABF but i had a VR6 final drive put in for a bit extra on top end.. IMO this is the perfect box for mk3 20VT
hope this helps
