okay had loads of problems with my golf gti mk3 96 reg :( brand new distributor crank sensor battery starter motor the list goes on but the latest problem im having is when i put the car in reverse and get to the biting point on the clutch it sounds really rough and feels like its juddering. Dont know what it could be as it comes and goes often does it one day and not the next and only seems to do it in reverse :( any suggestions ??? im clueless as to what it maybe. i guess its clutch or gearbox related
-
They are very very common for teeth breaking off the reverse gear in the gearbox, most likely what it is
-
does that mean i have to replace the gearbox ?? or will it be ok until i can afford to do such a thing ie use reverse as little as possible
-
As above, very common, The reverse idler normally makes the noise, when it starts loosing teeth
Does it pop out of reverse gear??

It should last you yet, if its just started to make the noise now, Soon or later it will need replacing with a new gear box or second hand unit.
As far as i have heard each time it pops out of reverse, you loosing a tooth, so eventually the reverse idelr will wear off and you will have no reverse gear.
-
It dse tend to pop out of gear quiet often but only in second gear after changing from first but its always seemed to have done this the problem I have is I drive for a living :( I hope it lasts about a month or so

have a look at this post

Should give you an idea

my reverse gear is noisy too but just had my car in for a cambelt and the garage said they go on for ages like that! i have however got a 2nd hand box to go on so that should sort it.
-
cheers for the link i may aswell run it until i cant use it how much is it to get one restored or a second hand one nowdays ??
-
i got quoted £400 for a rebuild, £350 for a rebuilt box off ebay and i bought one 2nd hand for £100. you have to run the risk of the 2nd hand one having the same issue though. if you can afford it you should go for a rebuild.
-
cheers for the info :) me thinks i should have to get a second hand one at this rate but we shall see :) thank you

My reverse has just started making a noise too. Works perfect, doesn't jump out of gear but I'm getting a rubbing sound as if its the wheel balance weights just catching something. I've checked it all out and it's definitely gear related as the noise disappears when I dip the clutch. Have I lost a tooth an it's maybe just rubbing on it?

Could be sticky release bearing or thrust bearing..

It had fresh gear oil not long ago. Only 93k miles too

it does not make a difference if you have changed the gear oil to fresh gear oil, The release bearing is part of the clutch kit.
P.S, Does it make the noise when stationary and you dip the clutch in & out or whilst driving??
-
my gearbox has a knackered reverse and if im reversing it still does it if i dip the clutch. if i take it out of gear whilst rolling back the noise goes away. does yours not make the noise then if you dip the clutch with it still in gear? if not then i would say its not gearbox.
-
No noise when I dip the clutch and no noise when stationary.
I'm thinking now it's a clutch issue then, like you say a release bearing as it can be snatchy at times but I put that down to needing a new clutch cable. Funny how it's only making a noise in reverse though and it disappears when I dip the clutch.
-
I think I'm having the same problem as when I dip the clutch the noise stops in reverse when I release the clutch it starts making the noise

You got gearbox reverse idler issue, Will need a new box at some point.

You've got the same problem, gearbox reverse idler issue, does it make a noise that sounds like flapping or tick, tick, tick??

When it gets to bitting point that's when the problem starts it sounds and seems like the plates are clashing but only in reverse the car seems to vibrate. Too but only when in Reverse fine in other gears

Could be your gearbox diff, either way you need a new box or a rebuild.
Ive managed to source some info on the net, Its stated below have a read...
The problem is that rivets are used to secure the ring gear They've used it since the MK1, and it continued through the 020 boxes, and the 02As even use rivets to secure the ring gears.
They break off. The bits of rivet can wreck (SMS - Self Machining Syndrome) the box. That is one way it fails.
On two of the rivets, the heads are larger, and these large heads are there to secure the cross shaft in the diff, the shaft with the circlip grooves.
Because they use rivets, they don't use circlips. If the head of the rivet breaks off, the cross shaft can float out and SMS the trans. That is another way it fails.
The other way they fail is the lack of a circlip on the cross shaft can allow the shaft to float, and knock on the large rivet heads, already over-worked securing the ring gear, and the heads break off and the first 2 examples result.
The repair is a bolt kit from VW or other sources that replaces the rivets with proper bolts and nuts, and then there are circlips included for the cross shaft. The VW part number for the 020 bolt kit is 171.498.088.A
Both 8V and 16V boxes use the exact same reverse gears and are equally at risk for damage (both also use the same diff, and are equally at risk for diff failure). The damage is caused by not allowing the car to stop before engaging reverse, or by having a faulty clutch which causes the mainshaft to continue spinning, and that will damage reverse. Once chipped, they'll make noise and eventually get worse, until they pop themselves out of gear. The damaged reverse gear is now mating against the other 2 gears, which isn't good for those either, and one is the mainshaft itself.

Thanks for all that info :) so it seems I need To get another gearbox then :(
-
 make that a gearbox for me too then.
Anyone got an agg engine and 020 box for sale?
Cash waiting, I'll refurb the gearbox myself and might as well have a spare engine on standby too.
