Title: code reader won't link?

Just bought a very clean 1.8t (agu)
Serviced it this morning a thought I would plug in them code reader to see if anything came up, it just won't link to car have tried everything just starts to read then fails with the "failed to link " message on the code reader screen
Any ideas ?

Yes it was cheap, but has worked perfectly on loads of other cars.

I got two code readers one generic one and a VAG specific one. The generic doesn't link with my golf but works on most older cars. And the VAG one only works with VAG cars. Think thats the problem.
