Been looking at Mk5 Golf 1.4 for the other half but have struggled to find much info on what to look for.
Heard issues of cambelts going early and gearboxes and they have to be run on 99 octane fuel.
use to mk2's and mk3's so these Mk5's are all a bit modern for me.
Any help would be great

Id piss myself if anyone put 99ron in a 1.4 petrol....no point surely?

I had one for 3 years and never had a problem, a friend of mine however had pretty much an identical car and just before trading the TC light came on which turned out to be the ABS sensor, VW wanted £1500 to sort it!!

My Gf bought one a few months ago. We got the seller to change the cambelt first. I "think" they need doing around 50k miles?
Recently it's developed a fault which looks to be the ABS sensor issue. Whilst these used to be expensive fixes, there is now a repair kit which is less than a couple of hundred quid i think.
We took it on a 1000 mile round trip last week. Whilst overtaking was a little bit slow, it cruised at 80mph fairly easily and sat just below 4000 revs. Fairly comfortable too (but i do own a Mk2).
Not a bad car TBH

I'd certainly look for a bigger engined MK5, we had these as pool cars, they weren't great. 1 with a snapped belt on 45k, the afforementioned ABS issue on all of them.
And theyre TORTOISE slow. sh!te on fuel too.
Umm....happy to help? sorry!
