As above what's the best way to split rx2s? And where can you get new bolts?
Cheers
Josh

Put the spline drive socket into the bolt and give it a good clout to break the seal of corrosion, crack them all off and use airgun or drill to unscrew or youll be there forever did this and every bolt came out intact, make sure to run the m7 tap through all the threads to clean them ,on reassembly i reused the original bolts with thread lock

You can get new bolts from eBay,
But you need to match them with the current ones you got,
Some Marked M7 and some Marked bbs VS

I'm about to strip some split rims, I've done a bit of searching for info and found myself on the Wheel Whores forum. In the split rim section there is a couple of stickies threads about stripping, refurb, rebuild and suppliers.
Take a look, although some of it is a bit OTT

Cheers bud, good shout with the 7 tap, did you round off any bolts? Because that's my nightmare!

No mate all bolts came out no problem,i heard they are titanium so drilling one out would certainly be a challenge, good luck

That should help them not rounding off then

They just shear if you get too rough with them!
Then you do have problems...

Mine are the same as these although I didn't buy this set

I doubt the bolts will be titanium as its an expensive material, more likely 12.9 steel, chrome plated from new, replacements will be around £100 for a full set. If they all come out ok you could have the bolts refinished and chromed.
The originals will have loctite on them. Make sure the socket fits really well, use heat and it well help release them.
Titanium and stainless versions are available as replacements but they are harder materials, more likely to damage threads and if not properly lubricated could easily get stuck and would be a nightmare to drill out.

They are M7x1.0 Titanium bolts - both standard and replacement.
Titanium is used because it is inert - both stainless and steel can give galvanic corrosion issues.
Titanium is not harder that steel - not high strength steel anyway...but they are still a pig to drill out if you shear one.
You should NOT lubricate them when you put them in...you should use Loctite, and torque them up.
I'll be amazed of some of the threads didn't need Heli-coiling too. I've re-furbed 5 sets and at least one has on every wheel.
-
i've had a set in the shed for a year now tried to split them, and one rounded off and another sheared the head off,so they have been sat in there ever since lol
-
i did mine and every bolt came out ok, and i am only a basic mechanic,
i just tapped the the ratchet to shock eack one then undid as normal, all out and ok, just need to run the tap in the holes to clean out after coating..
only prob i have now is i cant afford to get em refurbed, lol, getting quoted some daft amounts,
had a local blasting guy have a go at a centre to get a price, hes done a a1 job its totally stripped and back to bare aluminium, but that came out at 22per centre, thats without the wheel being done, but now i am wondering if the guys below will be ok with it, dont know how well they strip stuff before coating..
looking like i am going to run em up to cas coatings in leeds/bradford area, as they want 22+vat per wheel. so thats not too bad, but heard mixed reviews of them..
really want em done especially as 7j ones too...
either that or swap them as they are and my std coated wheels for something else, maybe a set of 928s with adapters :) or even d90s but prob have to put a bit of cash with em..
we shall see
good luck, just gotta give it a go!
-
ye mine are the 7j ones aswell ,but not sure what to do now as considering selling my golf ,but being the hoarder i am ,i might just leave them in the shed .Just incase i get another one lol
-
Thanks for all the replays guys sorry I didnt write back to all of you but did listen, and to be honest you well and truely put me off attempting this lol...... But I did
So got the wheels today and started undoing bolts
Wheel no:1
Rounded off thre bolts but managed to get one of those out
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/87425209-f5b4-4622-a897-ff6b2e496f99.jpg)
Wheel no:2
Rounded off two bolts but managed to get one out
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/1cfccdc4-a5f1-475d-8385-5df07481fcb5.jpg)
Wheel no:3
SPLIT!!!!!! Rounded off two bolts but got them both out
Wheel no:4
Rounded off one bolt and couldn't get it out
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/2305a1bf-3ac2-4994-93c8-a5ea669196ac.jpg)
So any ideas on how to get the four remaining bolts out? I tried hammering in a t45 in which worked on the other four. I also tried drilling one out, but burnt the drill bit and round that off :embarrassed: lol
-
Try heat and some easy outs

Yh I. Gunna take them to work tomorrow as we've got gas bottles and more tools!
Update
Got wheel four split by drilling out the bolt
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/647aa240-197e-43b4-abe9-7bea6185a8be.jpg)
-
To late
I was going to say soak them in plus gas over night. Come straight out :lipsrsealed:
-
fair play mate ,mine look in better nick than yours and mine wouldnt budge with heat or anything lol
-
Got the stud out of the second one I split just by using a small bolt extractor tool. So I'm gunna drill out the rest of the bolts and do the same
fair play mate ,mine look in better nick than yours and mine wouldnt budge with heat or anything lol
Yh I did think they'd be a LOT harder to split coz of the condition of them
-
Mine were in worse condition than yours and all bolts and threads were good ,suppose its luck of the draw . thinking of doing mine again (colour change) so just the locktight to deal with as it been less than 2 years since i did them.
-
mine will probably stay in the shed as thinking of getting a new car ,but just incase i want another mk3 they will be there lol
-
Get them sorted brett!
-
would love to mate but have made the decision mines getting sold ,but just because im a hoarder they will stay in the shed ,JUST INCASE i regret getting rid and get another one lol.all the extras will be going though
-
Got three split

Get them sorted brett!
+1 to this!!
-
i may push the boat out and take one of them to work and get the other broken bolt drilled out ,might lol
-
lol that sounds more like a might not  how many bolts have you got trouble with?
-
had one drilled out and one more to go and gave up trying to split them after that as we had tried heating the rim ,long bar on the spline key etc and basically got f**ked off lol, may well try soaking in plus gas and see how tha goes as on nights this week ,maye even inspire not to go view this other car at the weekend
-
Yeah i would defo finish the job if i were you, drilling titanium bolts out aint as hard as youd think, a carbide tipped or a cobalt drill super sharp and kept cool as the heat build up is what fecks them ,drill at a slow speed and use firm pressure, jobs a goodun ,he says, plus they will be worth a bit more
-
would you believe it had the intention of taking it to work to get wheel sorted and forgot to get it out the shed lol,but had a word with my mate in engineering and hes goin to do it for me tonight
-
Sweet so lets talk colours

Oooo yh lol, it's 1 1/2 meters long, but were gunna extend it so we can get a wings etc init
-
oh yes. Looking good. What colour(s) are on your mind then? Also when you put the bolts back in make sure you get some thread lock on them (if no1 has mentioned it before). Also if you need some split bolts, theres a website that sells them for i think £2-£3 (black forest industries) :)
