Title: I AM SO PISSED OFF AT MY CAR RIGHT NOW!!, @@@@
Post by: GOLF-MK3-GTI on 01 September 2012, 17:38
Right people this is the probelm, I am so confused on what is wrong with it, and i am loosing my patience with this car, Please help..

Yesterday i spent most of the day cleaning all the earth wires on my car, i also cleaned the one's under the battery tray,i replaced the earth wire from the coil to the engine with a new one.

i then got a new coil from GSF, its a good quality one as it has VW & Audi badge stamped on it, anyway i also replaced the roter arm and distrubutor cap as the old one's looked tired.

I took my car from a spin and i've been driving last night, Cleaning the earths have made a lot of difference as my lights have become brighter and i can see where i'm going on a night, lol.
yesterday i turned the engine off about 8 times and started it again and it was perfect.

today morning i started it and it started, been driving it all morning without any trouble.

Right this is the problem,

I parked up in my drive, was going to go out half an hour later, tried cranking it, but wouldnt start, i unplugged the ECU Temp sensor, still no joy, i unplugged maf, still no joy,

I then had my doubts on the coil as i took of the lead that comes from coil into distrubutor and it didn't spark, so i thought its the coil, anyway i had a spare coil in boot that works, so i tried that, but again it did not spark.
I then left the car for half an hour, came back and it started up first time

so now i am thinking if theres no power going into the coil at all, then how will it spark.

I have my doubts on the ECU Relay, No: 30 or could it be the ignition switch?

have any of you had problem like this? Please help.

Could be the immobiliser or the afore mentioned relays.
Change the relays first, they can be had for under a tenner each.
Also try the spare key (if you have one) as the chip can get a bit tired, or take the chip out and tape it to the transponder around the ignition switch, see if that helps...

Totally daft question but the battery is fine isn't it?  Have you checked?

lol, yes the battery is fine, 2 days ago it was used to start a vauxhall astra diesel.

And as far as i know if it was the immoboliser, then the car would start for 1 second and cut off, but i will try the sppare key, and this problem only ooccurs when the car is warm, but sometimes only.

I think the immobiliser works properly, because when I unlock the doors, the yellow light shows, and then after a bit it turns red, and if I try to start when red, it does nothing, unless I press unlock and then it shows yellow light, which then enables me to start the car

could this show if it's working?

Anything is possible, you say you think the immobiliser works so you obviously are not sure....
There in lies the nature of trouble shooting.
You need to work through from where you stick the key in to where the spark jumps out, obviously you can help yourself a lot by plugging it in to a code reader and checking for fault codes and a reset.
Worth looking back through the site history as this is common on Mk3's

when the car wont start get someone to crank the engine over and give the amp a tap, it should start up, or another trick is to disconnect the ign amp plug and reconnect it, both have proved the amp is faulty for me in the past, ive got a good s/h amp and relays if you need them mate?

its part of the coil, the plug is on the underside of it, iirc its a black plug with 3 or 4 wires going to it, very common to fail, aftermarket ones are crap you need to fit a genuine one

I've had this many times at work, the symptoms normally are cut out, won't start, no spark, sometimes you don't have fuel flow aswell, now I've also had it before where I've pulled a car in for a service, turned the engine off gone to restart it and it won't go, when I worked for a breakdown company before the Vw Audi Indy, we use to carry them in the vans as they are that common a fault

I am confused on where this part is tbh, because your saying it's part of the coil and it has 3 or 4 wires going to it, but sharki786 at the top he's posted a link via eBay, and that add says it normally has 6 to 7 pin connector?,

Have you checked if theres fuel getting through just thinking if its your fuel pump or the relay to the fuel pump?I cant remember on my old mk3 but sure you can hear the fuel pump prime up might be wrong just my guess

Fuel pump is okay, My brothers been driving it since morning, and so far is not troubled him, so fingers crossed, touch wood, but I mean it's intermittent problem, it will only happen once in a blue moon this car has me puzzled,

one thing I want to mention is, it has only started doing this, when I left the car in gear, and I started it by accident, after that this problem has started, could it have knocked the timing out?

This could not have knocked the timing out

Lol ok, atleast I know it cnt be the timing,

Anyway, the cars been on road for the full day and it has been switched on and off quite alot, been on local roads, dual carriageway, and it has not missed a beat, fingers crossed, it stays that way

sorry took a few days to reply.
if you was closer i couldav swaped my coil pack over with yours but as the cars driving its not the coil pack. the ignition amp has that 3pin connector that connects to the coil (i think) just trace it back and hopefully you should find it. you have changed the relays? check them to see if they get realy hot or are stone cold after the car has been started (if so then you have a duff rellay)

I might be wrong but I believe the ignition amplifier is mounted underneath the coil. Remove the coil and you'll see it behind it

sounds like it could be the crankshaft sensor i had the same problems last week ended up costing me a fortune and having a lot of unnecessary work done can you get a reading from it ?? if so it will most probs say camshaft sensor which means crank btw :) i replaced mine and its started up fine ever since

well just been out in it again and its perfect, no trouble at all so far,

I have not changed the relays yet, but will do at some point this week, if its not the relays then i will have ago replacing the crankshaft sensor & knock sensor, as they are the only things that need doing.

My brother got a new maf sensor from VW, New distributor, when he got the timing belt changed as well as a new water pump, so i know they all working.

Ive changed the ECU Temp sensor, cleaned the earths up, new coil, rotar arm, new distributor cap.

so as above only got a few niggly bits to replace and it all should be fine...
