someone is changing the timing belt alternator belt waterpump and all of the engine mounts on my golf..
how much would be a reasonalble price to pay for labour for all of this work?
oh and he will change the gearbox oil as well
i have supplied all of the parts which have cost me over 100 quid....
what would be a reasonalble price to pay for this if it was done in
a-a service centre or local garage
b-backyard mechanic (which is what is being done now)
the guy just said pay me what you think the work is worth as he is well aware that a golf is now worth next to nothing if i were to sell it...:)
-
what age and engine mate?
-
96 golf cl automatic
the best vw has to offer an entire 55kw...:)
-
i think that all of the parts cost more than the car is worth already :)..the joys of owning a golf :)
the engine is AAM.....:) 8 valve 1,8..again the most sought after engine among golf enthusiasts...:)
-
Well if he's not expecting full mechanic rates for the work then I reckon £100 is a fair enough deal for the hours involved.
-
maybe that sounds fair enough....the work is being done in poland so i don't know the rates here but will give that amount ti him
it's a job well done i believe...:)
-
I reckon about three hours work, allowing for a bit of grief with the water pump.
-
took a bit longer than that but he finished it finally...and how much would you pay for three hours of work?
-
Well you're looking at least £40-£60 an hour in a proper garage. Dealership would probably be nearer to £80 an hour I reckon!
-
wow not really worth fixin at a garage..i gave him 50 quid for his troubles...that's 10 more than he asked for and threw in a bottle of purple antifreeze as well...guess it was a good deal for both of us...he spent about 4 hours fixing the car...

VW/Audi is normally £82 per hour, on older cars or big jobs they will discount it or fix the labour cost.

4 hours is ok, water pump and rear engine mount can be grief if they have not been done before or for a long time.
Sounds like a bargain to me

You had a bonus there fella.

well tried the car out and it no longer clunks when changing gears...the engine mounts are doing their job...
but the interesting thing is now when I am going about 80mph and stomp on the accelerator then the revs go up to over 5000 and then automatically drop...i have no idea why as it did not do this before....is there a rev limiter on these cars that kicks in at high speeds? it is impossible to pass anyone on the motorway...:( as everone is driving 80-90mph...
-
Seems likley timing is out seeing as the cam belt has just been changed .
-
great...so will it need to get taken off and put back on again???
-
is it still safe to drive? i wont damage the engine if the timing is off??

Slipping clutch me thinks......
-
Well you should get it checked out soon as,its not ideal to drive it like that ,at least dont rev the nackers off it until its sorted.Think a faulty hall sensor in the dizzy can give the same symptons also

Auto

Sounds like the timing belt is out by a tooth and has forced the ecu into safe mode which limits the the engine to 5000rpm.
-
well i guess i will have to have someone teach me how to do the timing belt and then do it myself in the future...that is what i will do in the very near future...:)
