Morning peps,
I've found a very nice Red 3 Door 16v Mk2 with 90k on the clock going for a good price - only thing is it's a Cat D Stolen recovered from 10 years ago.
The owner says "Stolen and recovered in 1991 hence Cat D. No damage and full AA report carried out since this"
Whats people's opnion and and there any downfalls to buying something like this ??

If its had all the needed checks then should be fine.
And if it looks anything like the old silver beast then go for it.
Also, at least it shows the guy is being honnest.

I'd always be a bit unsure about a stolen recovered, but in this case it was 10 years ago, it's got an AA report and it's still going so it can't have been that bad. They usually go really cheap so I'm guessing this is the same. I suppose one of the pitfalls is that if you spend some coin on it to do it up it might be a minter but it will always be a Cat D so the price will never be what it should be. Good luck matey.

Well there is one huge downfall with insurance loss cars. If you have to make another claim on this car the insurance company will only give you scrap value for it. A friend got stung with a Peugeot 306 he bought the car 2 yrs ago and was involved in a rear end shunt just before xmas at a level crossing total non fault. He got £150 for the car as it had been a cat D from 2 yrs old through being stolen recovered, so be warned

Cheers for the info lads :)
I think I'll pass on this one then .... the hunt continues :)

my car was stolen and recovered, and tbh it can work out well.... depeding, my dads audi 80 was a stolen and recovered,
and my golf was a write off, cat c, it's all been checked and is in full workin order, a lot of people don't mind whether the car is/was written off, although it does reduce the price, you pay a lot less in the beginning.
with the golf, it cost £200, and needed an m.o.t and a vic check to be back on the road, (£70 ish) luckily my brother is a car mechanic and didl the work for me, but it still doesn't cost much. You need to find out whats best for you, generally with older cars you can pic them up for less, as they are written off for very little damage, that is very easily repaired, the insurance company just don't want to do it!
4 weeks ago when a guy drove stright ino the back of my car his insurance company wrote my car off, with the car being a 94 pug106, the damage was very little all it needed was the boot floor flattening down again, and the exhaust securing back in place, the scracthes on the plastic bumper don't even need paiting, and you don't bother with a car like that. so tbh it can be worth doin up a write off, ratehr than a stolen recovered, although the value is always less than book, you can be on a winner
if any of that made any sense?sorry if not

Buy it!
You get the car at a fraction of the cost! I'd buy it if I was looking. As for insurance companies not paying out much, they generally don't give you what you hope for anyway! Just insure it third party and keep your fingers crossed.
A mate of mine bought a write off for £500 a few years ago, it never caused him any problems and recently someone drove into it in a car park and wrote it off again! he's just had a pay out of £500 and because its only cat d he's still driving it! Jammy git!
Whatever you do, good luck
