Hi All,
I recently (9 days ago) purchased a 2 year old mk 6 GTI 210 from a main dealer. I am the first owner however as the car was a demonstrator or staff car and had only covered just over 7000 miles.
To cut a long story short,before purchase, we noticed the brake discs were a little rusty but it looked like surface rust and as the weather had been so bad and the car had been on the forecourt for about a month, we assumed that with a bit of driving around, they would clean up. Over the last 9 days, I have doe around 350 miles and there is no sign of the discs cleaning up, in fact, things have got worse and I can only liken the noise when braking lightly in traffic etc to that of a 70's beetle with drums all round. There is a constant low hum when driving too. On inspection, the discs are all badly pitted and ridged so this morning, I returned to the dealership in question who took the car to 2 lots of 'technical specialists' who all said apparently that there was nothing wrong with the actual function of the brakes (I didn't complain about their function) and that they agreed there was a noise but that I should go away and do another 1000 miles, whereupon, if I was still not happy, they would re-assess the problem.
I have come away after arguing my point for 30 mins or so and getting nowhere.
What are my rights?. What would you do? I have never spent this amount of money on a car before and to be honest I feel like they have taken my hard earned and now they don't want to know.
Very upset and angry.
Any advice gratefully received.
Ps.My partner has now phoned them and they have reduced the distance to 500 miles before re-assessment which has made me even angrier because now I feel like because I'm a woman, they were not taking me seriously.

if you have only had the car 9 days i would be leaving it at the dealer an telling them you want it sorted :smiley:

I agree, either they sort it or use your LEGAL 14 day cooling off period. Plenty more golfs out there :smiley:

If the discs are badly pitted then they won't get better, new discs and pads needed!

also mention this they will soon start stuttering.. tell them also you are not happy and will just go to another dealer :wink:

Unfortunately this is an issue with the mk6, i've had mine for nearly 2 and a half years now and the rear brakes have always made a grinding sound at low speeds, i think they even changed the size of the discs to try and stop it on later cars, as far as the pitting goes i've no idea but the grinding is normal, not good! But normal.

I used to work for SAAB head office and dealt wirh people rejecting cars purchased as approoved used cars or claiming costs back to fix them where dealers have been unwilling. My advice is the garage are a franchise and if you are not happy with their service talk direct to vw warranty department (although brakes are not a warranty item) they may be willing to talk to the dealer on your behalf to sort the problem. Either that or go get the discs changed and claim the costs back from the dealership, write them a letter with your reciept saying you want this amount refunded or you will take them to the small claims court.

As Jimbo says really, there's been plenty of discussion over on the MK6 board about the rusting of breaks, mines on 5mnth old and has already started rusting...it's a very pour design on VW part... :wink: it's something your have to learn to live with, as for the pitting I have no idea....I wud get onto VW cust serv and ask them to investigate the matter, with you being such a new customer they shud be willing to help
