Title: what does the E on gear knob stand for?

on my 85 jetta on the gear knob it says 1 2 3 4 E.
E is where 5th is and its fifth gear. does it stand for economy?

I believe it stands for "Economy" Does your car have the little gauge, that has a floating needle that tell you, you are driving "economically" iirc it works off vacuum from the inlet manifold

There is no gauge anywhere like that. My speedo don't have one ither. Although I do have a set of new clocks I need to put in as my mph needle wobbles up and down and you can hear the speedo cable spinning. Also the clock has stopped working and the mileage never goes up  :grin:
