Title: Hi, VW newbie!
Post by: Matt_N on 28 August 2012, 22:05
Hi.

I've been lurking for a few days since buying my first Golf GTI (and first VW) and there seems to be a lot of good info on here so I thought I'd better register and say hello! The Golf in question is a '98 R-plate 8v 5-door in Dragon Green with 98k on the clock and lots of little problems but it was cheap so I haven't got a problem spending a little bit on it. My intention is to get it tidied up and running properly then use it over the winter instead of my BMW.

The Golf.

And the BMW at DC12.

Yeah, thanks John. It said Matt N was taken when I tried to register again though so I threw an underscore in a used a different email address.

Welcome.....

Nice little winter runaround. Beemer looks tidy.

What kind of problems does the golf have then?

Thanks . I've probably made the Golf sound worse than it is tbh, from looking around on here they seem to be fairly common problems as well as general age related wear and tear. The list as it stands goes something along the lines of:

Rev limiter cutting in at 5k (timing issue I believe)
Had a problem with it refusing to start and then cutting out when it did at the weekend (going to try cleaning out the throttle body first)
Horrendous Scorpion exhaust that's loud enough to wake the dead and vibrates off the underside of the car  (will replace with standard and throw the Scorpion on eBay)
Neither window on the driver's side works (wiring into the doors looks ok and I can hear the motors click when switches are pressed so think it's knackered regs)
Bump strip on driver's door has been siliconed on at some point rather than replacing the broken clips, it's currently in the boot
Broken clips on passenger rear bump strip
Boot spoiler falling apart
Knackered aerial seal and mast (easy fix)
Horrible JVC headunit and speakers that work as and when they feel like it and generally sound horrible

That's about it, nothing major really it just needs a little bit of love. I did only pay £350 with 4 months tax and a month of MOT left so I don't mind spending a little bit of time and money on it assuming the MOT doesn't throw up anything major.
