Title: Tyre stretch help
Post by: stainesy on 28 August 2012, 14:10
Ok I'm asking this here as I will get better responses and more of them plus it does not relate to a car in general.
I have a set of 15" 8j wheels with and offset of ET20 front and rear.
It's going to be tight on the arches so I am going to want some tyre stretch but still needs to be safe to use as a daily driver.
What size tyres do I fit? Iv had a look at tyre stretch.com but they all look pretty muc the same to me.
Would like advice from people that have experiance with this that I know and trust.

If he wanted a safe daily driver, he wouldn't be fitting f**king stupid stretched tyres...period.
Tyres are approved to fit certain sized wheels for a reason.

He does have a point and how does this work at m.o.t time?

aslong as its not stupid stretch like 165/50 on an 8j then mot will be ok. nothing illegal about stretch, just some police dont like it.
iv gone through mots with 165/40 on a 7j fine.

It shouldn't be like that.
The manufacturer lists the appropriate widths of wheel for a given tyre in a given size...outwith that, it's not type approved...and for a reason.
If the manufacturer doesn't state it's compatible...it's for a reason.

Stretched tyres are a stupid fashion that should be banned.

its what you choose man! i run them because no way id get normal tyres under my arches anymore.

its what you choose man! i run them because no way id get normal tyres under my arches anymore.

And that's fine...
But people take it to the extreme...tyres overheat and de-laminate because there are forces in planes not designed to take load, accidents ensue...and innocent people may get hurt as a result.

It's the most stupid fashion ever to his VW modifying...stupid verging on dangerous.

LOL That is the most stupid thing I've seen in ages.
How can people think that looks good?
That looks sh!t...to the point of laughing out loud at them.
Meh

Another thing:
How anyone can tell me they are interested in making their car handle well, yet run stretched tyres, amazes  me.

Almost as stupid as claiming they want their FWD car to handle better whilst fitting wider rear wheels.
Usually with stretched tyres!

Tbh im not after stretch for looks or to be cool. It's so I can fit my 8j wheels without running.
That's why I'm going for 195 tyres as it isn't alot of stretch

Ok just had couple of tyres put on.
Could only afford 2 this week. Was abit worried about the stretch of 185 45 tyres on 8j wheels but they look awesome and to to bad. I like the way the rim pokes abit

You said Stretched!!1 I see no stretch!!

Well I thought a 185 45 on an 8j would have more of a stretch but I'm happy with this. The rims poke and it's safe. I did end up getting the nankangs in the end as the bloke had already ordered them and had them shipped for me plus my car ain't fast enough to worry about sliding. It's running a set of 4 165 nankangs at the mo and they seem ok for the type of driving I do in this. Plus a cant complain at £100 for 2 tyres fitted and balanced really.

Yeah I no iv had nankangs loads of times and never had an issue with them.  :undecided:
Even pushed my 165 stretched nankangs hard round a few corners today in the wet to see if they slide and they gripped pretty well in the wet.
They will do for now. I drive this like an old man as I don't want to break it.

185 45's worked out perfectly although it's very close on the rear and the bloody grub screw on my coilys at the rear won't undo

Took me ages to figure out what the clonking sound on the rear was till I figured out the wheel bolts are to long and hitting something inside the drum.

Little taster for all my mk3 chums.
