Title: OUTER CV BOOT 16V F REG
Post by: moonraker on 05 October 2003, 17:14
Have to change the cv boot for the dreaded mot - still could be worse.  Have you got any tips on doing the job or any advise please - I'm assuming that once I've removed the drive shaft from the car, one of the cv joints will be removable and i'll be able to replace the boots.

Has anyone had any success stretching the outer boot over the joint in situe useing a metal cone made of steel rod as I can make one a work

Cheers  Steve

Remove the driveshaft from the car , the outer joint will separate from the shaft by banging it with a rubber mallet.

I think its easier to do the job off the car. take the shaft off and hold it in a vice and as VR6 says hit the joint with a rubber mallet. you have to hit it quite hard to get it to ping past the spring clip on the shaft.

Wash the old one out with petrol and let it dry then fully lube it up with the grease you get in the cv kit.
