Title: Car reving by itself
Post by: ryanbrook on 25 August 2012, 20:28
MK4 Golf 1.6sr reving between 1200-1400 by itself. I unclipped the cable from the maf sensor and the problem goes away but soon as i put it back on the problem jumps back. Does anyone think this is the problem. I cleaned the throttle body the other day aswell but looking at vagcom the throttle body angle is at 9 which is about right i think.

Did the problem come after cleaning TB .If not scan it or get a new maf. :undecided:

Yes it came after cleaning the maf and changing the battery. I didn't remove the TB at all just took the air intake pipe off and cleaned what i could get to with Wynns cleaner. VAGCOM also brings up code "00533 - Idle speed regulation".

00533 - Idle Speed Regulation: Adaptation Limit (Add) Exceeded

Possible Symptoms
Bad Fuel Economy
Possible Causes
Air Leak between Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor and Engine
Injector(s) faulty
Fuel Pressure Regulator faulty
Throttle Body faulty
Intake Air Filter dirty

Possible Solutions
Perform Throttle Body Adaptation
Check Hoses and Pipes to/between Components
Check Intake Air Filter
Check Fuel Pressure Regulator
Check Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
Check Injector(s)

Ohh right. So you not think it is the MAF. i was certain it was. it would go fine when i unplugged it. Having second thoughts. What would be your guess?

i thought the tb should be between 5 and 7 degrees at idle on those engines. did you do a throttle body adaptation after you cleaned it? was it revving strangely straight away after cleaning the throttle body or has this developed since?

Soon as i cleaned the TB i am sure the problems started with the idling. What was happening was the car wasnt starting right away. Taking a few times so i changed the battery (unplugged a few minutes) and the problem hasnt came back. Just the horrible idling is still here. I didnt touch the TB though and i tried cleaning the maf today( after the problem started.

Haha. Right. I cleaned the throttle body, then i am sure problem occurred. Then today i tried cleaning the MAF to see if that would fix my problem but no help.

I tried doing a TB re-align but when i type the group number in on vagcom it just says error. The TB angle is 9 though. Car is shuddering as well.

how many miles have you done since cleaning it? they can take up to 40 miles to adapt themselves, its usually more like 5-10 though. also if the problem is something EGR related it can take a few miles to ping up an incorrect flow error. what are the maf values at idle and while driving?

The first thing you touch. Then got this, will be the course. Sounds like its not your maf if that was the second thing you touched, after the problem.

also check you reconnected properly any vacuum hoses you removed. whats your engine code? on some of the N/A engines i know there's a couple under the airbox that you can pull off without realising
