Title: Engine cutting out while driving
Post by: MrRogers on 25 August 2012, 20:22
Evening all,

Iv recently had a oil leak so not been driving the golf for a while and i had the rocker gasket changed yesterday as apparently this was the problem since this iv been taking it out for a spin last night engine cut out completely atleast 3-4 times while in motion and lost all power (very dangerous on a busy road) and wouldnt start again for 10 mins or so. I scanned the car for faults this morning and it brought up something to do with the battery so i replaced the battery this morning taken it out for another spin again and after 20 mins of driving cut out on me twice but this time before it cut out i got the "STOP oil pressure" light.

Is there anything that the garage may have forgotten to do while changing the gasket? Maybe air has gotten into the system some how? Ill be straight on the phone to them Tues morning but i thought i could get a heads up before hand.

Thanks all.

Sounds like alternator/battery.Check how many volts its getting with engine running (13.5v think). I had a problem years ago, sounds like yours. Also have a look around what they changed ,oil leaks or a trapped wire. Its easy done.  :lipsrsealed:

Ill give that a shot 2mro unplug it and let it run for a while and see if it cuts out. Oh yeah saying that it didnt just cut out while driving when left idling for about 15-20 mins it cut out aswel. Even if its the maf could it cause the oil warning light to come on? Thanks again gents.

The oil light sounds like the oil pick up pipe could be blocked if the oil pressure light is coming on..so would def be worth checking that. And the cutting out could be a faulty alternator because I recently had a simular problem, is ur battery light coming on the dash?

Yes mate the oil light and the battery light comes on then when you try turning it over the battery and oil light stay on wait 10-15 mins then it starts up gonna give it another scan now. I did think about the pickup pipe playing up aswel. One fault after another joys of a mk4 lol.

Does the battery warning light come on before it stalls. Does it only stall once its up to running temp ?
