Title: Help. Golf running like a bag of nails
Post by: JackM92 on 23 August 2012, 20:51
I have a 01 PD115 which has the following mods:
130 turbo and injector
Intercooler
EGR delete and 150 intake
Straight through exhaust

The work was carried out by the previous owner and he only had a 115 remap done on it (Mobile service). I have picked the car up tonight and its running rubbish, Doesnt pull like it should and pulls back alot, especially in 4,5 and 6th gear.
What is the problem? Do i need a live map to smooth out the power and tune the engine to the 130 turbo?
There is a light on the dash, Looks like a coiled wire sideways, Looked in the book and it says the glow plug. Could this be causing the problem?

Thanks

Could be a sensor MAF? or boost leak.

Thanks.
Apparently the last owner had it on the computer and it came up as brake pedal switch.
Could this be stopping the car from running properly? and how much does it usually cost, needing done asap.

Not normally

You got any smoke coming out of the back??

Yeah just the usual cloud of black smoke. Nothing un-normal.

Urm thats not usual.  You should get a little under load but that should clear through the rev range

Is the car spluttering??

Id say boost leak or maf sensor

Yeah juddering a lot when I get over 2k really.
Feels like its got a load of flat spot through out the turbo, Hence why i thought of a remap. It will be completely dead then burst in to life for a second then dead again etc.

Get your head under the bonnet and follow the boost pipes and look for anything obvious like a pipe hanging off

Also disconnect the MAF and see if it drives any better

Black smoke = definite boost leak somewhere along the lines.

Thought they all give out quite a bit of black smoke. Most of my mates tdi's do.

Anyway, Took the maf off then and took it for a quick blast. There is a section of dual carriage way near my house about half a mile long, Entered it at about 40mph and the best i could get out of it was 70mph. I was in 4th and it was crawling up slowly.

I will check in the morning if there is anything loose.

Not if they are running properly. Sounds like it could be a boost leak

EGR is clean. am not taking off the inlet as I cant be arsed. And no same reason as <<<that.

Next car I buy will not have to be mapped to achieve what I want, it will be prefect out the box....oh Ive heard that before....

Went to my local vw specialist whi have got a good name and they fixed the brake pedal switch and there was a slight boost leak which they fixed.
Turns out the real problem is the camshafts, They have quoted me £400 to supply and fit some 130 cams. Does this sound about right? and is there any benefit to 130 cams?

No its not but Id be wanting new followers at least as the 130 ones fail as well!

I will have to ring them tomorrow and see whats included.
Will the car with the current spec run a pd150 turbo or will i need more parts? I just though while it was in getting fixed and getting a remap after it might be worth putting the 150 turbo on.

It will run a 150 turbo no problem. So its the cams on a 115PD have gone then? And to think everyone says its only the PD 150's which suffer from cam failure..... :lipsrsealed:

Yep they were pretty sure, Going to book it in for next thursday but im going in the morning to make sure its definitely them. The engine only on 74k!

What sort of power do you think it will be running after 150 turbo and decent remap?

Thanks

190bhp any more and your pushing the turbo to the limit.

More than happy with 190bhp so will stick to that. Hopefully i can manage to get a cheap PD150 turbo before then!

Another question i forgot to ask. If I fit a 150 turbo will it need to be mapped straight away or will it be OK for about 4/5 weeks or will the car still run a bit sh*t?
