Saw the advert in Classic Cars - one owner Atlas Grey 16v , 103,000 miles at £4995
Been looking for a long time so pursued it. Sadly the owner had died aged 91 and had the car from new
Spoke to the VW main dealer who knew the car before I even gave the reg number. Described by them as mint , fully serviced, anything wrong it was fixed, even a new second hand engine etce tc
They said it was much admired whenever it was in for service and said the new owner would be very lucky to own it

Cool...
I wouldn't go pasting it all over the net what you paid for it TBH...

Congrats looking forward to some pics ... I am sure your research was good and it's all genuine, was your mk2 man impressed?
Did you get it for close to what you were going to ask??
-
I bought it on the strength of the VW garage saying how fantastic it was + full VW history every year
My mate will do a final look over it just in case .......
£4995 not paid !
-
You do realise that if it has had VW dealer service all its life, you're gonna have to keep it up. Otherwise it's lack of 100% provenance will affect the value when you sell it on.
I'm sure Ken will buy it off you when you come to sell it.

Already got a 3 door atlas grey... :P
& That one looks to good to give it to the Wife.... :D :D :D

Its a keeper for me - plus my local VW dealer would be clueless about servicing it. No computer point to plug into!
I have a local guy who knows what an engine is
Once its all sorted I will post pictures if I can figure it out, that is

I would find a VW specialist to service it....
Joking aside What Elvi says is true... Keep the stamps up to date in the book... will mean a lot more in years to come, than what it will cost...

happy days
as for the service history thing. id rather buy a car with reputable service history from a VW specialist rather than a dealers. how many VAG dealer garages still have people trained in k-jet?
-
I have a very good local VW specialist
With my last Mk2 the local VW dealer suggested I go elsewhere as they did not carry parts - quite politely but the message was clear that they did not want the car . Seriously and that was 6 years ago at least
No intention of selling in any case and the premium is not worth it
Point taken though

No Surprise there then...
No intention of selling in any case and the premium is not worth it
I pay £125.00 for a full fluid service once a year from a VW Specialist & a M8 (No mate Rates on service though)...
Hardly a fortune and he only use's VW parts and oil & coolant!
Worth £100.00 just for the stamp IMO....
Always a keeper 'til you get bored!!
-
Bored? Not really
I have two other cars that keep me amused - I just add cars rather than sell
Fancy a Corrado Storm now I am back in VW mode !!
-
A friend of mine has a fairly new Polo (07 plate) He knows nothing about cars but has always had VW's. He took it for it's first service to the VW garage he bought it from. Amongst other things an oil change should have been undertaken. They managed to drain the oil, put a new sump plug in then not fill up with oil. My mate drove a few miles and the engine seized. Did they accept any responsibility??? No! It took him over a year to get them to accept partial responsibility and pay 50% of the cost of a replacement engine. Needless to say he now uses a specialist or independent.
In my view and in many other peoples view main dealer does not guarantee quality, it is purely for the stamp. A specialist is always happy for your custom and happy to service and maintain older cars without ridiculous labour costs.
If you have a rare, exotic car worth hundreds of thousands with barely any mileage then the stamp is worth it.
-
Service history only matters to cars in that sort of condition and price.
-
As long as it is serviced I don't think people would expect VW to still be doing it, a specialist is IMO a better service as they know the cars, problem you may share with me is when and how much service work done, how much servicing is required after 12 months and 400 miles?
-

IMO a full service every 12 months.... all the fluids changed, for what it costs whats the issue???
You have a genuine lower mileage car 103K & Damien even lower - you are prepared to spend £1000's on a set of alloys or to buy the car.... But wont spend £125.00 to get it serviced properly... Not only that you could be devaluing your car by not having a service stamp or invoice in your folder, so why buy such an expensive/low mileage car in the 1st place... Might as well bought my missus car with 175K on it and no service history and saved £2.5K to waste on sh!te....
Say's it all in my mind.....

Can you not read?? Just because I am a classic car man and try to preserve old cars do you have to pick holes in every thing I do and say??

We all buy VW Golfs for different reasons
I want a totally standard Mk2 16v as it left the factory. Hopefully all is original including the radio
The standard Mk2 is a classic car in the making (if not now alongside the MK1)
A VW specialist knows MK2s much better than a VW main dealer who looks after modern cars with plugin diagnostics
When I come to sell the buyer will be like me , be after a standard MK2 with a very strong history of being well looked after
Its coming down next Saturday/Sunday so looking forward to being back in a MK2.

Glad you finally found your car :) You going to get it painted oak green?
Damien, I think Ken is arguing with himself as what you said agrees with what he is on about! 1am posting says it all ;)
-

Servicing intervals, and service history are very subjective, as long as the current owner is happy with what has been carried out, and a prospective owner is happy with the cars past, thats all thats important

This. Sod spending £125 on servicing when you can do it yourself for well under half that using genuine parts/fluids still and have all of the proof to back it up still. Personally I class a FSH if the receipts are all there, a stamp is just a stamp.
-
Yes I had been looking for an Oak Green and only Oak Green
But I plan to save money on a respray and have therapy
Grey is the new green , grey is the new green .......

Think you will find loads out there who prefer grey to green... Please update us when it arrives

Please keep the thread 'Tidy" Fella's... Ins and outs of servicing/history with this thread, we have covered

Yes Boss!!! :D :D :D :D :D
-
Awhh, just as I was going to tell you how mine goes to the dealer ones a year for an oil change and another stamp in the book.
That's all I will let them do tho'. The rest of the work gets done at a local specialist.

My friend who knows Mk2s inside out is seeing the car tomorrow, Friday
Lets hope its a good one - if not the search continues or I go for a Corrado Storm (its green!!)
-
Let us know how it goes!! Pics too please
-
My friend who is the Mk2 man went up to Bradford from London, cash in pocket to buy the mint 16v Mk2
Sadly my and Will's definition of mint is mint .... not rusted rear end and boot floor
So, back he came with the cash and no car
The search continues but the Corrado Storm I had as a plan B sounds attractive

What a PITA.... All that way to find it was a Nail...
Why can't people just be honest when selling stuff!!
Sounds like a normal £1K car...
-
Will reckons that its a £2000 car
In reality its a car that has had an engined replaced with another one (no details on the source) and rust where he had not seen rust before .....
I was very much swayed by the VW dealer in Morecombe saying it was mint. The seller was doing his best to sell and has overpriced the car
Oddly enough the high price made me think it must be a good one . Mugs away!
-
Well at least you didnt find this out after handing over the cash
-
In all honesty, I'm not at all surprised, A 20+ years car with over a 100k on the clock
The days of finding a rust free Mk2 are very probably over! Even the elusive time warp cars have rust, especially GTI's with all the extra water traps
I suspect that full body rebuilds are now going to be the way forward to achieve what so many want!

I hope this isn't true....
There must be one or two out there that are "More or Less" rust free...
I don't mean rust free panels or tailgates, but actual shell's on the whole that are rot free....
They may take some finding but lets not give up hope...
As it so happens the 3 door that I've got at present that was a "Cat C right off" is rust free.... but it needs wings and doors and a tailgate... but who would wanna buy it??
-
I have a rust free Mk2.
Mind you, that's because its not seen daylight since 1999.
-
Mines rust free on the shell. Wasnt when i got it though. My old 5door was good bar a little hole in the sil. British weather doeasnt help trying to preserve mk2s.
