I have a track prepped mk4 and whilst I've commuted in the past it was only from SE London to Reading but next week I have an interview in Cumbria which works out as a 600 mile round journey. Earmuffs are not permitted and whilst I could have one ear piece in to listen to some music from my iphone I question it's effectiveness.
I've set the damping on a relatively soft setting but the wishbones etc. rose jointed I only pray the roads are forgiving in and around Cumbria. Are there any local members that can comment on the road surface in the surrounding area?

buy a 4x4

Hell man, I commute up and down the M6 and surrounding roads in my Mk4. Its a similar spec to yours but have you removed the sound deadening?
The roads as far as I am aware are okay though I am not quite that far north (I am at the level of Preston!).

I don't know what you have done to your mk4 and I assume the same can be said of my mk4 but essentially I still have part of my dashboard but no heater matrix so I have some rather large holes in the bulkhead into the engine bay so it gets pretty loud. And with part of the dash missing there's also going to be no headunit or anything of the sort in the car to drown out the noise.
The custom tubular wishbones don't have bushes and the solid top mounts provide most of the vibration so I've tried to set the damping on the bilstein b16 pss9 to a softer setting but they just weren't designed for comfort in mind.

Where abouts in Cumbria are you going? M6 and a66 are generally ok, they soon get rough when you leave them though!
-
Yours is a bit further on than mine now! Ouch, that is gonna be some 600miles. Personally, I would get the train and a hire car as you may not be able to hear the questions when you get to your interview! hehehe.

Carlisle. Google maps suggests it to be 335 miles each way. Migraine galore it seems and the only form of entertainment I have is watching my coolant expansion tank fill up as the coolant expands (the expansion tank and other bits have been relocated inside the cabin for weight distribution)
If google map is accurate I would have to be on the road from 3am, I'm also worried after the drive I won't be in the best of moods or most talkative. But at the same time I take comfort in the knowledge that my car is close by whenever I'm away from home - sort of a piece of home.

Drive up the day before and stay in a travel lodge.

No point going if your going to be like that

I live 5 minutes from Carlisle, half way inbetween carlisle and penrith, right on Southwaite services. Main roads are good, none main roads are hellish!! Carlisle itself is smooth but with many road works at the minute. Where is it your going in carlisle?
-
Roads in carlisle will be fine, you'll be on the m6 right up to carlisle anyway. It's when you get further west into Cumbria that the roads get interesting.

I think it would be wise to consider alternative transport not least because of savings and convenience. It appears national express coach from London victoria to Carlisle - Lonsdale, is pretty appealing - transport from here seems to be pretty good. Price is £~24 each way so at £48 return even with train fare to London and the consequent return journey it's still cheaper than me driving.
I average ~48 mpg, on a 700 miles round trip it will cost me over £~92
What's more, as my engine is technically still in it's first 2000 miles break-in period it would be less than ideal to commute with.

48mpg from a 1.8t......must be having a laugh :lipsrsealed:

iv never managed that in 3 years of ownership and iv taken it all around the uk driving like a poof and still never managed it
-
Lady luck must certainly be on my side  I think the 1.8t is doing pretty well given its age. Mine has been completely rebuilt so it has excellent compression but even before the rebuild it was not by any means atrocious compared with other engines of similar mileage.

I did 120 miles round trip in my other car a month back, took a friend with me. He didnt like it lol. You cant really talk over 70mph as its too loud, you have to open the window to let the sound out. Its not a golf, its considerably lighter and less well built than a golf with no sound deadening etc... so I can imagine youd be okay lol. It was good fun on the way over, but the way back we both got bored, when we got back we just turned the engine off on my drive and sat there to let out ear ring out not saying a word  48mpg is awesome. I averaged about 16... and I was doing 70 most of the way  cumbrian roads are good if you are on the mains, the back roads are bumpy definately. The main roads have a really large grain though, so road noise is understandably bad. Infact the most uncomfortable Ive ever been in a car is down near bexley in kent, I dont know the motorway name but its made up of loads of patches (I think its going back into london). Coilovers set to track going down there bouncing off the roof, wasnt fun

Why do you not like or want to use ear muffs also it may be worth looking at filling the bulkhead holes.

I was under the impression it wasn't legal, I couldn't find a definite answer to this so didn't want to risk it. Could anyone clarify this?

did you get a mk4 1.8tdi

Why would you put yourself through that sh!t journey before an interview? Train it.

I have been to Carlisle twice in the past month and must say the roads are as others have said ok on motorways and a roads, anythin other than that is pretty awful even by my standards (near Manchester) I would definatley get the holes that route into the engine bay blocked up, the heat and smell for one isnt good for you....
Get up the night before and stay as close as possible and you can always leave your car around the corner from the interview
