Title: Mk2 16V - Should I consider or dismiss
Post by: Bieldside on 22 August 2012, 16:18
Looking at a one owner Mk2 16V with one owner from new

Well kept but engine problems at 95000 miles - engine replaced with a second hand one by a VW main dealer. That engine had problems when the water pump failed and repair work again carried out

Asking price is in excess of £4000!

Should I walk away due to the engine problems - no idea where the engine came from or its mileage when fitted

I think I should walk or offer a silly price eg £3000 perhaps

Depends on what else it has or looks like....

Got any more info or pictures??

Totally standard 16V , looks as if its been "untouched" and owned by a mature owner from new

Seats perfect and garaged all its life so bodywork good.

Just concerns me that the engine could be a high miler and that the recorded 103,000 miles is meaningless

Seems dear to me...

Would have to be a "stunner" for £4K+

Engine issue knock's a couple of grand off for my liking.... Means it not an original car...

I would pay £4000 for a stunner but with a new engine (or second hand one) its not an original car

Does a well looked after Mk2 16v have engine failure? Unusual I would guess

Would it be caused by standing idle for too long?

4k is way overpriced.

would need to see pictures of it, but its hardly well kept if its had a rep engine & then water pump failure. sounds like a car owned by an old person kept in a garage and driven but never bothered servicing it until something went bang

water pump failure wouldnt be an issue unless you drove the car on & overheated it - which again tells me the person who owned it hadnt a clue & hence no mechanical sympathy

Need Pics!!  Too Expensive at the moment.

As always.... BUY ON  BODYWORK.

Engines are cheap and easy to replace.

Depending on the severity of the water pump failure, it could be minor overheating requiring a skim, or a seized engine.

What year is it?

I tend to agree that a car that is not used that much gives more problems than a well used car

Too much money for this me thinks. The engine lets it down

lets be fair, ANY car you buy might have had an engine change and the owner might  just not admit it, and dvla informed so the logboook matches

especially if they know the value would be a lot less   :lipsrsealed:

Nice but overpriced IMO...

£3 - £3.5K would be my guess but as said it would have to be a stunner with NO RUST anywhere and have all VAG parts inc discs etc & full service history and backed up with all the MOT's....

Atlas Grey is a nice colour too, but check for lacquer peel as it's a metallic...

It does but pass side is either damaged or has water ingress, and that price id be wanting them perfect

A main dealer fitting a second hand engine sounds strange, if they did I am sure the paper work would record details especially mileage, I think there are quite a few golfs out there about 100k mile mark which have had engine work especially head problems, look at the bills in depth and if it's been done properly it should not be a huge issue, most things are reasonably replaced on the mechanical side. The big issue with the price for me would be the bodywork.. If it has been garaged all it's life and the paintwork is undamaged it would be quite a special car, don't forget though that a car put away when wet and left can rot just as easily as one left outside... Check wheel arches, around windscreen, filler cap from the wheel arch, front and rear valances , bottoms of doors,if they are un molested and clean you could be on a winner if under 4k imo.

I have the contact numbers for the VW garage to call and see if they can recall the car - two years ago that the work was done

One of my friends would look at the car for me as he is an expert of MK2s but yes, it could be a good one. Have suggested £3500 as a price and awaiting a reply

Thanks for the feedback. Not many 1 owner cars out there

I have spoken to the garage who know the car well and say it is a mint example and a joy to see . Much admired by all and the owner was 91 Is that a record for a Mk2 16V owner. Little chance of it being abused !

So looking forward to having the car and enjoying the pleasure again of a Mk2 16V - only one complaint. Its not Oak Green!

Thanks for all the thoughts

ps paid £3750 - happy with that after the garage spoke so highly of it

Why do the wheel arch trims look like they've been painted?
