On my way home tonight I decided to try out this Launch Control lark in the ED35.
Traffic lights; sport mode, ESP off, left foot brake, right foot about 3/4 throttle (3200rpm), foot clean off brake...
Then there was a slight pause and then the front wheels lit up, and revs went about to the redline, with underwhelming forward motion and lots of tyre smoke. Call me sinical but I actually think I could have done better with a normal manual, as the 'launch control' appeared to just dump the clutch! Not what I was expecting to say the least.
I was under the impression that it would tug against the brake, and immediately fire when I took my foot off the brake, not nearly instantly break traction?! Or am I missing something??

Did you just keep your foot planted on launch?
If so then you did it wrong. Once launched off the line back of to half throttle till you get full traction and then re-apply the right foot down.
Hopefully I'll not have the same issue in a few weeks.

If an 'R' would light all 4 wheels up I'd have definitely had one!!
Think I may have kept too much throttle on. I assumed the 'launch control' would have regulated the initial launch to minimise wheel spin...evidently not! and the surface was a bit slick to be fair. Will try again another time, although I can't imagine it's good for the trans!

You got warranty though so why worry :lipsrsealed:

And it's not mapped...

 my best times at gti were just to put it in man mode and just plant it

I imagine on anything other than ultra grippy tarmac a launch with the traction control still on would be better, you'd need a few attempts in launch control to work out exactly how much grip is there and therefore how much power to put down.
Funny part to it though...the girlfriend who was in the car, whilst being pinned into her seat manaeged to say...'F*ck me it sounds amazing!!' She's a keeper

You won't  ; I've not tried launch control yet as I want to get some miles on before pushing the performance; but I've done a few quick starts without pushing the revs too high and there's no hint of losing traction - well you wouldn't expect it to would you

I can assure you you will be the fastest away from the lights every time ... and no wheelspin even in the wet

.... and once this has been mastered its all about doing it with the esp off

I used the LC on my ED30 less then 10 times in the 3 years I had it. I made the same mistake the first time I used it (full throttle). Once you have worked out best launch usually 2.5-2.8k revs then once launched give it more revs based on traction. It is faster than in D or S but only fractionally. Used it once on the MK6 and not used it on the ED35 yet. Better have some fun later on

The advice of 2.5k revs appears right. Just been on a stag do and a mate of mine who recently sold his scirocco r reckons 2.5k, then foot off the brake and plant the throttle. Then with a bit of practice just drag the brake pedal slightly to stop the spinning. Which is actually a technique used on motorbikes.
Funnily enough he also said that the initial launch is faster than what he can do in his (manual) M3

I always thought that launch control worked with the thottle pinned to the floor. If your left foot is on the brake, the revs won't go about a certain amount with DBW. So if you are in Sport with the brake pressed and throttle pinned, the car knows you are wanting a rapid start, so will give you the pre-programmed amount of revs to give you a consistant launch every time. If you are modulating the throttle yourselves, surely the car will not recognise that as a request for launch control, and it will be you doing the driving instead.

LC does limit the revs to 3-3.2k so you can launch with full throttle, but as you have to disengage the ESP it will spin if you keep the throttle wide open. LC does give a controlled launch eg engagement of drive and disengages the drive until the brake is released.

I see. I thought it would maybe short shift for you if it sensed too much wheelspin.

Nope...that was my understanding and then when I tried just looked a prat!!

not tired it, but read somewhere you can engage TC again after the procedure. Must give it a try sometime...
