Ive got a early (K-Reg) 86k mile 8v 5 door mk3 and its VERY clean, Its close, well not too far away from being perfect
Being a 8v its not the quickest, and Ive always loved my mate VR6, Im thinking of getting a VR6 lump put in mine but I have a few questions (sorry if they've been asked before)
1. what sort of cost is involved?
2. As mine is SO clean should I just leave it as is
3. Sell it and buy a VR6? (dont really want to sell because it is so clean)
Thanks
-
go on do it mate
The cost would be, donor car, cost of service items, cost of someone willing to remove 2 engines, do some wiring and make it look factory
it wouldnt be that hard because you would have a donor sat there, and they are both mk3s, id do do the swap for you mate

Vr6 are not quick anyway. Only on motorway. Too heavy at front too much on fuel thats why they cost pence to buy.
-
Keep ity orig def. If u want vr6 buy one will be cheaper then getting conversion done PROPERLY
-
theres a lot more to it then taking one engine out and putting another one in
dont build what you can already buy for a fraction of the cost
-
Exactly right
-
Easier to buy a VR if thats what you want.Easier to go for a 20vt conversion imho if you really want to keep the car you already have.
-
If you decide to go vr... get the 2.9 corrado lump for an extra 20ish bhp
-
It is a very easy conversion to do even more so with a donor car but being honest I doubt it is worth it in the long run.
-
As already said buy a vr6 or fit 20v turbo!
I have a vr6 and only have it for the engine noise

I disagree... If its easy to do then of course its worth it, the knowledge you gain from doing an engine conversion can help you in the long run fixing, upgrading parts... or the confidence to chuck a 1.8t in there
Vr engines can be picked up cheap

I think Im going to get mine running nice and leave it as is
-
100% right decision

f**k that
VR it FFS
some right sh!t been said in this thread LOL

Damn right, do what lowlifedubber has done, bought a vr... kept the engine and bits needed... sell the rest for more than the origional purchase
-
As above
this is what its all about.. well it is for me anyhow
-
Been there, done it. You'll never regret the noise and the conversion is a piece of p*ss if you have a full donor car. Can be done over a weekend

"touché"

I got a Highline VR donor for £400, itook the bits I needed, including the leathers  and made £600 back on the rest of the bits and the shell
Thursday morning my car was a GTI 8v, Friday teatime it was a VR
The extra coin I made from the rest of the donor bought my new exhaust
The best thing I ever did to my car and cost me next to nothing!!
One thing to note, if yours is on a K, then you will need the pedal box from the donor too which are a real pain in the sphincter to change
-
Keep it orig mate, Vrs are not that great anyway.

"touché" an acknowledgment of the striking home of a remark or the capping of a witticism. (French)
Off course it's worth doing...

What fun can be had from doing this? Any guidance of advice?
-
I'd say do it dude, I'm popping mine into my mk2 and half way in. takes a little longer if you want a good job make sure you have lots of time and a considerate girlfriend.
Also like these guys say you'll gain a lot of info and feel like a king when it turns over
-
Keep it orig mate, Vrs are not that great anyway.
They are however, far superior to the ashmatic 8v.
I'm no VR6 fan...but they do sound awesome and at least produce better results than the old 8v.
Stick a V6 in it...A V8 won't fit...so a V6 will have to do!

I'm no vr6 fan but both the 16v mk3 Iv had were only slightly better performers than the old 8v engine that used to be in mine
VR6 are quicker.. Even off the motorway

This whole argument seems to be mainly based on money being no object. OP when you say worth it do you mean financially or mechanically?
-
To get it done properly u might as well buy a car with all of it done
-
Some people like the challenge, getting there hands dirty and generally learning how to put an engine in.. how to strip it all down and rebuild it back up
A vr conversion isnt the best out there but it gets the ball rolling to go bigger better and having the mechanical know how to do such things
The ££ ive spent rebuilding my vr6 engine cost more than the car itself and what ive learnt by doing it is worth it
-
^^ what he says
id say its certainly worth it if you love your car and wnat to learn a bit.. also worth doing if your shell id a good one rather than buying a VR thats not as structurally sound etc
Taunton geezer seems a bit negative in the posts iv seen him make, not only in this thread
-
I'm interested to know what he drives....
-
He's a cock I don't even read his posts
-
i'd just buy a VR6. if it is so clean it will get snapped up at a good price then you can buy a clean VR6!
at nearly 3 litres and 6 cylinders with "only" 170bhp i'd rather put the 1.8t in then get it chipped ect ect.
