Hello its my first time posting on here and i Really need some help dubbersÂ… my MK1 1.8 Gti keeps overheating and I have no idea what it is :huh:
So far I have changed the temperature sensor on engine head housing, the thermostat, the water pump, the radiator, the radiator temperature sensor, which is located at the bottom of the radiator and I have also tested my gauge on my dash using an vdo gauge which shows the fan coming on for a few seconds at 128 C and cuts out at 125 C and in the Bentley manual its says the fan should kick in at 97 C when the car is at stand still?
The electrics also seem ok because when I use a fuse to bridge the wires from the radiator temperature sensor the fan kicks in and stays on as it should with a fuse bridgedÂ…
Has anyone got any ideas because I have not got a clue any more :cry: ??? Pleaseeeee help!

Hi,
Are there any symptoms of head gasket leakage, loss of water, white smoke, dodgy oil?
Just prior to it starting to overheat had you had anything done to the car? replaced
water/antifreeze anything like that?
Also does it run hotter when you are driving normally or only becomes apparent when
at a standstill?

Thanks for the quick response markÂ… there are no symptoms of head gasket leakage, or loss of water or white smoke and the oil isnÂ’t dodgy at all as its jus hand a recent oil change and the oil is very cleanÂ…
I have not done anything to the car before this problem started :huh:
It does run cooler when driving the car but it still seems like its over heating as the temperature gauge is ¾ of the way where as when its standing still the gauge is just short of the max water temperature level which doesn’t seem rite at all?? :sad:
Any other ideas would be much appreciated, as I really want to take the car to the GTI Festival at Santa pod this weekend :undecided:

Is it overheating or is the guage reading high ?.

Hi Mitz,
Seems like you've covered or replaced most of the cooling system, other thoughts are:
Is there an air lock in the system, possibly heater matrix, was the heater in the
full on position when refilled, does the heater work and drop the temps when full
on.
When you start from cold does the temp rise, then fall when the thermostat opens
and do the hoses and radiator gradually get hot. (watch you fingers).
Have you checked the plugs for any differences between cylinders also
is there any reason it would be running very lean, has the tickover increased at all
are the plugs white or the normal brownish grey?
Its a difficult one this if the guage is OK.Just thought is the system pressuring up as this
decreases the boiling point, check the expansion tank cap seal (carefully) or for any other pressure leaks.
Please please please be careful if you do any of this as super heated steam tends to smart abit
, I am not a mechanic and these are only
suggestions which might help, sounds like you know what your doing anyway.

The heater was on full position when refilled with coolant; the temperature also does not drop when the heater is on? :huh:

The hoses do get very hot and I have also replaced the expansion tank cap, which didn’t help. :undecided:
However I have not checked the plugs for any differences and also have no idea how to check if there is an air lock in the system? Any information on this would be greatÂ… will check the plugs tomorrow for any differences.
Here are also some pics of what the temperature shows in the car and also on a vdo gauge when the car had been running for 10 mins. (The fan still had not kicked in and when it did it only ran for 30 seconds then cut out again) :huh:
The tick over seems to be fine as you can see in the picÂ…

Hi,
Just found a thread in the 'garage' section on 'overheating' from Dubslug sounds
exactly the symptoms you've been experiencing, not sure which sensor they're
on about but have a read, might sort you.

Cheers for that Mark, I checked the senor and that is exactly what it was :grin:….
It was all because an aftermarket sensor was used which was reading the temperature too high :angry:Â…

sounds like slow speed setting on the sensor was broke, or the slow speed on fan. some models have 2 speed fans, 1st comes on at 95ish, 2nd at 108ish

fogive me 4 being stupid but still unsure what 2 do had water pump fan swiich and the stat do plus head gasket dne whats next

i seem to have very simalar probs with my mk1! can anyone tell me what the other two sensors (one behind and one underneath) near the temp sensor are and would they cause problems if not working propaly!
