hi there,
For the last couple of months i've been driving my dad's 8v gti and was going to buy it off him, and then i got an insurance quote (i'm only 18!!) So.... the plan is to get a 1.8 carb mk2 and spend about £200 on the engine. From what i can gather a weber carb, replacement air filter and a gti exhaust are the way to go. Is this correct? Do any mk2's come with the weber as standard? Is it worth replacing the cam, as i think i read somewhere to use the 8v gti cam? Basically, i was wondering if anyone on here can recommend what to do, and i know it seems obvious, but is it worth going for the 1.6 for any stange reason? Also, what is realistic with my budget?
I know its lots of questions but i would appreciate any help!
Cheers, Ben.

your on the right lines ben, ive got a 1.6 mk2 driver with a weber carb and gti head fitted, and it keeps up with a friends 8v gti without too much bother.
i think you would be better off goin for the 1.8 as it has more horses out of the box.

your mates gti must be shagged!
i would get gti manifold/exhaust gti cam and a panel filter and the weber if you can stretch to it defiantely cos the pierburg is sh!t.
also try taking off any unecessary weight cos this will make it quicker
