Hi guys,
As my GTI was recently stolen ...without a noise ....in the middle of the night....under my open bedroomwindow....the police suspects that they probablyhave been "reading" my key with a laptop and so opened my car etc etc...
Now I am in the process of ordering the same one.....thinking as hell how to give my wife a bit more secure feeling (see is not happy with my idea...since 5 GTI's have been stolen in my neighbourhood.
I came up with the idea of opening my car with the key....so the old fashion inserting and twisting way.
Am I right in thinking that this is the way that thugs cannot pick up the important signal to open up my car.....
Any technical explanation on this subject is more than welcome...
-
You will struggle to open door with a key the lock is not exposed. How was your car stolen without a key.Even if access was gained one would struggle to start it without the physical attributes of a key?
-
i was under the impression that your key will never transmit the same information twice. it works on a rolling code.
if 5 GTIs have been stolen in your area in a similar way then i'm surprised the police aren't looking in to whoever is responsible for ordering keys at the local dealership!
-
Dealers should not code keys unless they have the actual car in, I learnt that the hard way when I lost my van keys!
-
Hi guys,
The car was stolen without my keys....so I am desperately searching for a method...to prevent this.
I overlooked the fact that the lock is not visible....dammm
I do not know what the police does...I honestly think....very little
I read a lot about how skillfull they are....hooking laptops on an odb or obd....it takes them 3 minutes to steal your car...without a noise....
-
Just get a steering lock, the visible aspect will put would be thieves off.
-
Yes you are correct and my wife demands it....however she changed her mind quickly when I replied that they will simply ring our doorbell to ask for the keys...

and they need the V5 document too. the whole key process through vw is a bit of a ballache.. i wasn't seriously accusing them of thieving cars  it is possible to code a new remote that will disarm and unlock the car in just a few minutes though, provided you have access to the car with the ignition on. Immobiliser is not always so straight forward.

Hi Topher,
Howabout an old fashioned switch hidden in the car to switch things on/off...say fuel or ignition....

I was about to suggest that, one that i've seen used elsewhere (on an old morris minor ) was wiring the ignition live into the brake light circuit in conjunction with a hidden switch.
You can only start the car after having flicked the switch and whilst the brake pedal is pressed.

I would have thought VW would still be using a two stage system in there keys. A remote section that opens and closes the door and an imobiliser section that uses TIRIS keyring tag system.
You could a couple of years ago still get aftermarket imobilisers that you had to touch a key fob up against a certain part of the dash to disable it.
If your so worried they will simply ring the bell and force the keys you need an anti hijack system that will kill the car once the revs drop to a certain level. People like Clifford use to do these.

Hi Topher,

I get asked this a lot at work. Yes it's possible but will leave fault codes in the ecu memory. Pulling the fuse for the instrument cluster will do the same thing the car won't even start with the correct key. However.. I don't know what it's like in the netherlands but over here the scumbags stealing top end cars break in to houses and threaten the owners for the keys. The last thing you want is them forcing the way back in to the house to ask you where the kill switch is.
-
Haven't some re maps got a security feature built in that will cut the engine?

+1
Let them have the car
Is it worth them killing you over it?
If you're that bothered, build a garage

One thing I do like the idea of however would be letting them drive a few miles down the road and then cutting the engine. How great would that be!

do some tracker companys not do that :undecided:
-
Insurance man just left...the stupid b&stard began preaching with my wife still in the house (she was due to leave but ran into him) that buying another GTI is stupid since 85 percent of his stolen cars where Golf.
He said that me opening a car with the key (inserting and twisting) does not make a difference to thieves.
-
Have a tracker fitted? Or at least put tracker stickers in each window corner. That WILL make them think twice as they won't want all the local police being able to track it to their lock up and finding the other 5 GTI's!

Yes I find that a good idea but I guess you cannot buy them just like that (stickers)
I will inquire with the lease co.

Some do, and they call you if your car is in motion when you have informed them of your activity times.
Also, trackers may not be the answer as they usually park the stolen cars up in lead plated lorries which the tracker signal cannot reach
-
Lead plated lorries is not true...just think how heavy that would be!?
If a thief is pretty sure a car is tracked, they won't bother. If it's a case of unsure either way, they'll tend to nick it and park it not far away down a small street. If the police are there a couple of hours later it's tracked.
But lead plated lorries aren't used.
-
How can they be pretty sure ?, can the measure that eg ?
I do not think it will be quite expensive to have it gps traceable....as far as I read on the internet, I will inquire soon.
-
If a car has tracker stickers for example, word on the street etc etc.
Hell if someone is clever enough to code car keys from a distance they're probably clever enough to hack into the tracker company's database
-
For a moment you had me re-assured
-
Haha sorry!
-
Just read this.

I always thought modern VWs were impossible to steal without the keys or a tow truck.
Keyless start is apparently less secure according to some recent reports.
Have the insurance company paid out? (not sure how that works with leasing) but have heard of instances where they initially refused if the keys were not stolen.
-
Yepp, insurance paid out.
The production week of the new one will start tomorrow and will be delivered next week earliest.
I have bought a bearlock for the DSG that is how far I am willing to go.
-
You could always put these on the windows....

Mmm nice!

That does not really bother them....in doubt they park your vehicle a day or so in a closeby city if the police does not show up they steal it with confidence.
My lease company has fitted track and trace on their expensive cars for years now....only two were ever retraced....so
