Title: 2005 Golf GTI
Post by: dave5544 on 16 August 2012, 15:10
Hi everybody, firstly I am new to this site so looking forward to getting some good information.

I have never owned a GTI before but I am going to look at one tomorrow. It is a 2005 with 89,000 miles. With this sort of mileage what should I be looking for, what issues can I expect or should I just stay clear? It is supposed to have a full VW service history. The reason I am looking at car of this age is I just want some cheap and fun driving for a while.

I meant to add, the car I mentioned above is a manual. I am also going to look at an 06 GTI with 74,000 miles with the DSG box, can there be problems with this gearbox with this mileage?

In my opinion a car like a golf with a full service history, been well looked after and has 80,000+ miles on it should be absolutely fine.

Check engine code. Could be an AXX starting one being an 05 reg.If it is give it a good run,if it's got a really loud rattle on tick over the small cam chain & tensioner need changing & it's not cheap. They do have a small rattle on tick over due to the direct injection but if it's really loud think long & hard mate. I know had to have it done on my first GTI & that was an 05 reg.

I hope you find the one you're looking for fella. Do listen to Gene though, loud injectors can definitely be mistaken for cam chain tensioner. I have loud injectors! At first I was convinced something was wrong, but I've been assured time and time again that it is indeed the injectors.

Good luck dude
