Title: Sap marks on roof of car
Post by: mbradbrook on 15 August 2012, 19:53
Evening all,

I bought my metallic black mk6 Golf gti last December. The car is in really good condition apart from  some marks on the roof. I presume that these are either where tree sap or bird sh!t has damaged the clear coat. The dealer said that they tried to machine polish them out but i suspect they didn't even attempt it. I've tried to polish them out by hand (Scratchx and Autoglym paint renovator) but it hasn't made much difference. I was thinking about asking a detailer to machine polish the car (this is still an option - is there anyone near Chipping Sodbury/ Yate north of Bristol?). Alternatively I've thought about buying a DA polisher and having a go myself. I've seen the Buff Daddy DA on the Waxamomo website but i'm not sure what pads or polishes to use. Any advice on either option would be really appreciated.

Cheers

Matt

Have you got a pic you could post up? This sounds very similar to my Audi A4 when I bought it a few years back, if it has gone deep into the clearcote no amount of polishing or wet sanding will remove it,
If you could get a pic of the marks in question that would make things a lot easier.

i've a few different polishes you can try before you splash out on a d/a. Do you use a pad for polishing?

but pics would help

Thanks for the replies. The weather has been awful so i haven't been able to get a photo. Hopefully this weekend.

I use a microfibre pad for polishing.

I've tried taking photos but i can't pick up the marks! I just get reflections from the paint. I polished the car with Auto Finesse Tripple today and then finished with a coat of AG High Definition Wax. The car has never been so shiney but in certain light the roof shows loads of marks which does spoil it. Do you think machinine polishing is the way to go? I was thinking along the lines of a Buff Daddy DA machine, Meguires #83 and 80 and meguires cutting and polishing pads. Would this be a good starting point?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Cheers

Polish wise I'd go for menzerna 203 s and 85 re 5 , nice polishes to work with, good working times, finish down well.

Yes, I've never looked back and would'nt be without my DA machine now.

I'd start from scratch and do a full paint correction job on it ... it sounds like the marks are below all the current stuff you have applied on top.

Strip all the current waxes off (APC and Panel Wipe)
Iron X
Tar remover
Clay
Machine Polish
Protect with wax or sealant

and a good wash and rinse between each of the above

When you polish you will need good lighting so that you can see whether any marks are left.  Then apply wax / sealant !
