Hey guys,
I've just up-graded my old gti to a mark 2 1991 gti. It is a fine beast in many ways. However.... It is seriously lumpy when it starts, occasionaly cuts out before its been running for 5mins, backfires a treat when changing down the gears and has no power whatsoever below 2000rpm. It also runs a bit too hot.
I've changed the plugs, leads, dist cap, rotor arm, battery which although needed doing has not helped.
It's got a kent cam. Could this cause the starting problem?
It runs fine when warm, although the starting problem seems to have nothing to do with warm or cold. I turned it off earlier for half hour, then it wouldn't re start.

right... u need to firstly check the ignition timing and ensure its about 6btdc at 2250rpm with blue temp sender off.. and then set ur co to about 2% on idle.. the reason the co need to be a little higher is due to the cam and the increased lumpy idle
if u want more help please feel free to ask... but the symptoms sound to me like its not been set up properly after the cam was installed

Thanks. ye, thought the timing should prob be done next. Do you think this is also the reason why it is running a bit hot?

yeh i recon its under fuelling and has 2 much advence on the ignition... its a 10min setup where r u based??

Ok, done the timing and ye, it is better. Still not quite right but defo better. Still threatening to cut out but managed to resist. Defo something still up with it though, so any more suggestions gladly welcomed! Cheers.x

Clean out the ISV and the throttle body.

right get some carb spray cleaner and take the rubber boot off the inlet manifold and give it a good spray till its nice and clean... then take ou the idle screw and clean it up aswell.. then start the car dissconect the blue temp sender, then rev 3times over 3000rpm then adjust ur idle speed to 1000rpm then plug ur temp sender back in rev freely and happy driving! :wink:
