Has anyone ever been to Berlin?
Where's the best area to stay, or any hotel reccomendations? I don't want to spend too much, central or close to direct transport would be ideal!

I went about 7 years ago. I was young so didn't really appreciate where I was so I can't name hotels or areas, we stayed with friends. However I do recommend going to visit the wall, it had a sort of aura around it. I was cheeky and got a hammer and managed to scrape a couple of bits of graffiti to keep as a souvenir.

I went in 2010 for the christmas markets (which were awesome) and before in about 2005.
Its great and I can thoroughly recommend it.
I did a special offer through BA and we stayed at Andels Berlin http://www.vi-hotels.com/en/andels-berlin/ (http://www.vi-hotels.com/en/andels-berlin/) which is kind of a modern new age hotel thing.. really spacious rooms and good food although the sky bar was a tad pricey (it did have good views though). Great location about 10 minutes from town and right outside is an S Bahn stop (tram - there are loads in berlin and I think a day pass costs about 2 euro). Berlin is nice and very pleasantly hot in summer and very cold in winter.
As for Berlin itself there is loads to do, especially if you are into Post War/Cold War history.. the DDR museum, Checkpoint Charlie, Topography of Terror, Brandenberg Gate etc... http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2011/aug/17/top-10-museums-berlin-city-guides (http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2011/aug/17/top-10-museums-berlin-city-guides). There are also tours and the Zoo if you like that kind of stuff.
There are loads of good restaurants and bars and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.
You must try a currywurst while you are there.. its like a hotdog with curry sauce and curly fries! Really good with a beer!
There are also nice places outside of the city like Potsdam which takes a while on the S Bahn but is a nice open market town.

I remember visiting this. It was absolutely amazing, check out the images at the bottom of the page. Highly recommend going in here.

i went in 1986 as a serving soldier and before the wall came down, fantastic city the contrast between east and west at the time was like night and day. went across to east berlin in full uniform and toured around then had a full 3 course meal in the poshest restaurant for 14 of us for about 50 quid :shocked:
dont ask about the wild night out in west berlin involving a convertible pool table/bath and strippers/tarts :lipsrsealed:

We went a few years back and had 2 apartments in bundersplatz which was about a 10 minute train ride from the centre. It was the Turkish quarter so food and beers etc were cheaper than the centre.
Did all the touristy stuff like go up the reichstag, Brandenburg gate etc did a load of stuff to do withthe war like checkpoint Charlie and a couple of museums. Did some shopping, went to a labour camp.
Can't really remember on detail as was pretty out of it for most of the week.

I went there last Easter, we were touring round eastern europe so was the case of going to the first hotel that had room.
Most things have been covered in the previous replies, the sony centre (postdamer Platz) is well worth a look (go at night as it's light up) there's a building you can get the lift up for an amazing panorama of the city.
When I was there the Reichstag was pre-booked visitors only (terrorism) so you'll want to check that too.
The easiest way to get around is on the S-Bahn (like the DLR) or the U-Bahn (like the tube) the trick to these is know what's station is at the end of the line you want to get on otherwise it could be confusing. The S-Bahn is cheap and quick and lets you explore the whole city.

The Fernsehturm... great views and well worth it! Built by the East Germans for having a good look at what was going on in West Berlin :nerd:

Second that, will go as far as saying most German cities are pretty good places to go.
Just got in from Düsseldorf today after a business trip to Duren, sat nav had a mare so got a good drive around the city before finding the airport :laugh:
Old East Germany can be a bit imposing but has cheeky Germanic Croydon thing going on.
