Title: Top mounts
Post by: Khare on 14 August 2012, 16:43
It shouldn't be like this right?

Changed them over the other day but O/S is knocking over bumps, and there's a massive gap in between the plate and the body. Could it be cheap mounts? Bought them for a £9 delivered...

Can I point out that in the first two pics the rubber is being pushed upwards by the weight of the car.

Nope, they should not be like that, the problem is cheap mounts or you have assembled something wrong.

From experience and seeing others, the clearance should be a bit less than that.

Mounts I think are ok, they seemed decent quality when I inspected them. What I think I may have done wrong is not screwed down enough the threaded nut, as the spring was pretty tight and my friend couldn't compress it that much. I'll take it all apart on Sunday, wind down the coilover so the spring isn't tight and then refit. I'll report back with a solution

Oh and Wayne, I'm honoured that your 30,000th post was advice for a problem of mine...Fits in rather nicely

Yeah I always use tierod, but thought I'd try something different. Ford Galaxy has the same fitment as VR6, which is the same as Mk3.

The mounts can look ok until the weight of car is on them...

I would say the gap is too big..

Yeah I always use Tierod too, just had lower arms with the R32 bushes in, will be fitting Flo-flex poly top mounts this weekend. Will see the outcome of fitting these to see the gap I get with coilovers too.

Don't. I thought about them, looked into them this evening and there's more horror stories than praises.
