can anyone direct me to a link showing how to adjust the gear cables on my 1999 mk4, ive seen the video for 2000 + where theres a 5mm hole on the shifter to lock it off... but mine does not have this... my gear stick is really sloppy and needs adjusting asap... cheers guys

My 1999 car has the hole :undecided:

I have a 98 mk4 golf and had the same problem,I adjusted mine by adjusted the nut at the gearbox end that sits just above the two linkage cables.think it's a ten mm nut and you can slide it forward or backwards, mine only needed about 1mm moving forward, took some sloppiness out,but not all of it.you just have to try to move it abit at a time as it throws out your gear selection at the same time.i had to remove the battery only to get at the nut, hope this helps abit

the linkages were changed some time in 99 I believe. Earlier cars have a very sloppy crap shift, and have bolt on ends at the box connection. later cars have press on ends held in with circlips.
The alignment lock and 4mm hole on the lever are on later types, earlier types don't have this and feel utterly crap.
If you have the older type, it's a great upgrade to the later type if you get a shifter, cables, and shift tower to fit to the box.

Whats your box code?
