Title: Exhaust rattle
Post by: ryanbrook on 13 August 2012, 15:05
Exhaust is rattling when the car is first started up, then rattles when in second gear at higher revs. Had a look under and can't seem to find it to be a heat shield rattling. I think the cat is bust but not sure. Any idea?

Give the exhaust a good whack with your hand. the rattle should be obvious. its also common for stones to get stuck in between the exhaust and the small crossmember just behind the cat which causes quite a noise.

recently had had a new system from the cat back. Sure its the cat, also the cat sits low anyway and when i go over humps its scrapes too, so that might of fooked it.

have a look at the exhaust downpipe heatshield. It's a very very common rattle. I sorted mine on the 8v by getting two large hose clamps and joining them to make one clamp big enough to go round the downpipe, and once there I tightened it up as much as it would go and never rattled again.
