Right my golf has got a clicking noise when driving.
It sounds like when there's a stone in the tyre but I have checked them and checked all the brakes.
I checked the drive shafts and there was something rubbing but moved it and it's still doing it
Could anyone else think of something?
It's only when moving it's not so loud going straight louder when turning left and doesn't make a noise going right . I can't see the wheel touching anything either
Anyone else got an idea?
UPDATED
replaced the drive shaft saturday and the clicking has come back now i havent abused it at all as its hardly been driven. everything was done ok.
now im stumped
-
Cv joint?
-
Cv joints are usually knocking not clicking ain't they?
-
Nah they click mate, worse when cold and full lock too.
-
I have been in a few cars with them and they have always knocked. But great how much will that cost?!
-
ABS ring?
-
When I looked at it , it looked ok
-
Knocking is usually arb bushes, topmounts or struts, wishbones bushes under hard braking and clicking is usually cv joints dry without grease etc
This is what Iv expierenced.
-
Hmm could I be cheeky and remove the gaitor and grease it up? It would last a week wouldn't it ?
-
Depends on the joint really and how bad it is.
If you remove the driveshaft which doesnt take long you can see the state of the joint that way.
If its nackered youl see metal pieces broke inside the joint anyhow.
My mates tdi is the same funny enough we changing it tomoz morning :nerd:
-
It's been clicking about 4 or 5 days . Might try pumping grease in it until a new one comes lol are the ones from the bay any good as I'm assuming the stealers is mega. Or smf or a similar company
-
Stealers if £300 for a complete driveshaft.....
I bought a J&R complete driveshaft and had no problems with it. But some people have had them break very quickly
-
My mate bought just the joint but I dont know where from probaly a cheap one but il find out how much he bought it for and if its any good
Im sure TPS will sell just the joint tbh
-
f**k me £300!! God I can't afford that I think cheap joint from somewhere is gonna have to be the way
-

Much easier to change the whole shaft thats why I went with J&R plus you dont have to mess around with the cv grease and get it f**king everywhere
-
How much?
-
£65 with 2 year warranty
-
Im with GTIcheeseman on this fook paying that for a driveshaft lmao
Good job I get my stuff free  not what you its who you know

This one sounds good
-
Like I said some people have had problems but many haven't including myself. Mines done about 25k now and the 2 year no quibble warranty is good
-
How many people have issues lol tbh I only want it long enough to either restore my one or buy a new vw one
-
I dont know, about 91 lol
Look at their feedback and search google
-
Hmm I think it's Werth a try
-
Little update my wheel arch liner was down so pind it back up now it only clicks left full lock so I'm not convinced it's a cv joint
-
If it clicks on full lock it still cud be a cv joint.
I wouldnt be too concerned at the moment, it will get worse in future change it then.
-
Its only left though right never clicked then it clicked going straight now its stopped going straight and just clicks turning left, got no other syptoms at all just clicking turning left
-
Well driving along to hastings and its all come back just clicking no other syptoms though so ill buy a jr tonight and fit it asap hopefully it will be ok for a few days
-
How much are new cv joints from the stealers roughly thinking of refurbing both drive shafts
-
Bend over lube up and get ready for a shafting.....
Are you 100% sure its the CV joint?
-
How much are new cv joints from the stealers roughly thinking of refurbing both drive shafts
you'd need the grease from the drive shaft applied liberally where the sun dont shine if your going there
mate was qouted close to £400 but for some reason it seems to be more expensive here in Suffolk, VW further north qouted just under £300
-
For just a cv joint?!?! f**k ill stick to the ebay shaft
-
Changed my mates on weekend he bought a cheapy for his PD130 £35 and done the job.
We will see how long it lasts but for £35 from a local motor shop isnt bad at all.
(This is just an outer cv joint)
-
I got one from J&R on ebay that was a hole shaft for £55 I hoping that will last until I can save for a better quality one or get a half decent second hand one
-
Good call.
-
There's some on ebay new for £100 ish so might save up for them they must be better quality than £50 ones lol
-
in my last post that was fitted btw
-
Anyone got a good guide for doing a drive shaft
-
Crack off hub nut and wheel bolts,
Jack car up,
Remove wheel,
Undo and remove the 3 ball joint bolts (allows you to have more room to pull out driveshaft)
Use mallet to knock driveshaft out of wheel bearing,
undo 6 bolts on gearbox (M8/M10 spline depending on model)
Wiggle out driveshaft,
Reverse to install.
In and out in half hour...
-
So basically strip in down mostly, need to get a ball joint splitter lol what about taking the strut off the hub
-
No need for a ball joint splitter as you're not taking the ball joint out the hub. Just the 3 bolts which hold the ball joint to the wishbone. And taking it out the end of the wishbone leaving it still in the hub.
Have I mentioned taking the strut off?
No
You dont need to
-
right yesterday changed my drive shaft all went well after having to buy more tools!
but today i have the old click click click click when turning left again! it seems to be the drivers side but now i cant pin point if its back or front
now i know its a cheap shaft but it cant have gone bust all ready i havent even abused it!
it is slightly pissing me off!
tomorrow im gonna strip down the back drivers side wheel, brakes and hub to check anything there
really do need help! this car is doing my head in
-
Where abouts are you in the country?
If your close by I dont mind haviing a look to see if we can solve it?
-
kent?
-
Im in north london, Mainly Islington and Tottenham.
If your over this way at any point I'd be happy to help pinpoint it.
-
You at a garage?
-
No,Not a garage fella
-
Some said a wheel bearing?
-
Could be, when mine went it wasn't a click, More of a Bomp Bomp Bomp Bomp,
The noise was only noticeable when turning left, after awhile it was there all the time.
The noise used to speed up and slow down with the speed of the car.
Get it up on axle stands so the front wheels are off the ground,
Start the car up and select 1st or 2nd gear and let it idle,
Have some one turn the steering wheel whilst you stand by the front wheel, you should be able to pinpoint what wheel its from,
Turn the engine off and check the wheel for play, although there wasn't any play in mine it was still the bearing.
-
so pretty much what i have, its going to a mate at a garage thursday so i guess ill see what he says
i have installed tht j&r shaft and it seems weird
-
Someone suggested top mounts?
-
Right the clicking is now there when going straight and knocking when turning left but still f**k all going right! Really need help trying to sell this but can't in this state :(
-
Right the noise got louder so I can now actually tell its from the back offside rear wheel so I'm thinking bearings died??
