Title: 1.8t into a 2.0
Post by: mar_k on 10 August 2012, 16:27
Are there any threads on here covering the swap?
Basicly I have 2.0 which I seem unable to sell for what I want.
I was selling it so I could buy a 1.8t, but since its not selling I am considering swapping the engine.
That doesn't bother me, thats the easy bit but Im wondering what else needs changing.

ECU
Engine Loom
Dash Cluster to match the 1.8t ECU?

Is it a straight forward conversion or are the actual car looms and fuse box's different.

any advice would be great or pointers to a\ thread that covers it

It will need to be coded to the car unless you can get hold of the clocks that come with the donor engine

With mk4's so cheap these days its no longer cost effective to do the swap.  Dai bought a complete donor car for £1300.  Its the little things like coolant pipes and the arb being different that people dont realise and thats where costs start mounting

I know what you mean,
Its just so difficult trying to sell a 2.0 gti. I wish I hadn't of bought it.
Coming over from Fords was a good move, Had I of done my homework Id have realised the 2.0 was a bad move.

I just dont want to let it go for peanuts even though peanuts is what its worth!

Its an X reg with 103k on the clocks. Its in fair condition and I have been asking for £1750 but not even had a call.

Sad times as it looks like Ill have to take a hit or keep the thing

i converted my 1.6 to a 1.8t aum and its more hassle than its worth mate only done it because i killed the engine in the 1.6 and spend loads sorting the body work so didnt want to get rid, if i could go back sell up and just buy a 1.8t i deffo would

Sooo tempted to write a guide for people who want to stick 1.8T into a mk4.  Amount of times it gets asked and no one searches.

Wasnt directed at you personally.

Chances are, your 2.0 box will be 02J so you would probably be alright in terms of transmission as you can use your 2.0 setup.  You would need a new clutch to cope with 1.8T power, but a 2.0 clutch would more than likely bolt onto the 1.8T block, but soon die from the power.

Looms you will need the engine loom and the looms that go to the ECU.  Brakes would need upgrade and full 1.8T exhaust or something 2.25" bigger bore.

You could always do a K04 conversion at the same time. With the second hand prices of S3 and LCR being so low you could brake them for the parts you need and make money off what you don't want. Pick the right donor car and you could have 280bhp, big brakes and a leather interior. Depends if you have the time, money, skill etc.
