A few years back, quite a few now I did hear dsg reference from a group of Audi/vw techs as standing for disaster struck gearbox and doesn't select gearsbox
I'm a bit old school but it's just not 'proper' fun unless your stirring the gear box yourself.

Regardless of other peoples opinions I still don't and won't believe a true petrol head would choose an auto over a manual

A week?
2 hours was enough to drive me round the bend and have me begging for a manual.
To each their own. :lipsrsealed:

I have ad DSG courtesy cars, would have it in a diesel work horse, but not in a 'fun' car I want to drive.
However you dress it up is still just an auto box

I would have to agree I've driven a few DSG cars and while I would choose DSG on an underpowered diesel (say 1.6 TDI) for sitting in traffic on the motorway, anything remotely sporty and I would prefer manual. That said, a mapped DSG Golf R would be an absolute beast, being able to hit silly figures every run.

I don't agree with this comment one bit, some peeps have to drive autos/dsg for a reason...they might have the choice..
-
Lol you can still use the DSG as a manual box! I love mine using the paddle shift to maximum effect and im not sure you can change faster in anycase
And thats in a DIESEL

Tiptronic anyone

Racing drivers are not petrol heads in your opinion as you don't find many manual boxes in them now a days.

Yeah clutches are so last decade
Or rather clutch peddles

I didn't realise you lived on a race track where every 1/1000th of a second counts?
I think you will also find that most 'racing cars' don't use Dog Sh*t Gearboxes...they use automated sequencial manuals. A very different beast to a twin clutch gearbox. But ho hum...

Manuals are for the ones who couldn't afford the £1200 dsg option on purchase lol

Lol, criticise all you like, just sick of people on here who can't accept that it's down to personal choice
If you don't like DSG great, if you do like it great.
I have DSG, and I won't be getting it again.....
Just sick of the the people who think they know better than anyone else......

Just to clarify I haven't condemned anyone's choice for choosing the auto option, I just prefer driving my cars rather than just steering them

It's just this kind of comment that makes me laugh. How can not having a clutch pedal mean that you are not driving the car? Most of us still drive manuals too so just because you dont like DSG doesnt mean that others who chose DSG are not petrol heads or have given up on being a driver. DSG does take a bit of getting used and some feel they are not in charge. I really enjoyed trying to master it and was like learning a new skill. However if give it time it gives you just as much pleasure as a regular manual plus the added bonus of blips on the down change for example.
-
dont u just love it when u hit a jam in the center and your left leg is up dwn up dwn, on a hill when u stall it our must turn the radio down to pull away, dsg is mint in a modern car but a manuel car was better 10 years ago but not now adays to much traffic, dsg best of both worlds and trust me ive had sum probs with my dsg and i still love dsg cars, i am a petrol head! my names chunk now suck my dick!

now close the thread

dont u just love it when u hit a jam in the center and your left leg is up dwn up dwn,
And?
My left leg works...what's the issue?
on a hill when u stall it
I've not stalled a car for 10 years or more...hill starts really shouldn't be hard to master.
I have the ability to work two feet and one hand in perfect unison.
so I don't need electronics to do a billy basic skill that should be mastered at an early age.
our must turn the radio down to pull away,
What the actual f**k?

Wow...what a mature and reasoned argument.
-
However if give it time it gives you just as much pleasure as a regular manual plus the added bonus of blips on the down change for example.
You get as much pleasure from operating a micro switch with less feedback than a Playstation controller?...or derive pleasure from using a gearbox where manual doesn't actually mean manual..it means sort of manual if the ECU agrees with what you think you need...and only then, it the cars own time.
Can't you blip the throttle on a downchange?
I can.
It's a skill that's been available since cars were invented!
-
dsg! dsg!
-
Someone is just trolling here if the other manual v DSG thread is anything to go by.
All my cars bar one have been manual and the auto I had really made driving very boring but that could be because it was on a Pajero jeep that was slower than a week in jail
That aside, each to their own. Some folk prefer 5 door cars and others wouldn't thank you for one. Some prefer derv some petrol. Its very much down to your own personal taste.
I'm sure when electric windows / remote central locking / electric wing mirrors and so on came in, some folk would say "What a waste of time, for all it takes to do it manually" So for me, autos are just another evolution in the motor industry and no doubt in years to come when we are all old our grandchildren will be asking us if we really had to change gears with a stick in the middle of the car
-
wot u saying i cant use my feet and hands in perfect unison? im not a divvy!. i mastered driving when i was 14 when my dad gave me a xr2, all i have driven in my 13 years of driving are man cars exc a range rover, dsg is better and easier and faster,
-
spot on there!!!

It's a pity you haven't mastered the use of the English Language!
If you mastered using your feet and hands in perfect harmony, not having to rely on electronics to not stall the engine, shouldn't be an issue.
you raised it...not me!
DSG = better, eh?
Had any problems with your DSG?

hell yea and i still luv it! replaced under warrenty on a car they and vw know is tuned right up

Lock thread please Raffe, these threads always end in the same way...

Over the years I have been on numerous owners forums as my cars have changed and there is always a 'sensitive' subject, which has clearly been found here
Still amazes me though with us all being adults how it gets taken so seriously, it is only the internet and a place for a bit of chat and humour to get away from the real world, let's all hug and be friends again

Mine has, leaking slave and ultimately a slipping clutch after approx 2,000 miles. So manual or DSG, turns out they're both as sh!t as each other.
-
always makes me smile these threads, end of the day, dsg or manual, more door or three door we are still GTI owners

i think the fact i have only driven our mk5 Pirelli twice (other than moving it out the way to get to the mk6) since i have had the Ed35 answers the question
-
Yeah real petrol heads only have 3 doors or is it 5?
Real petrol heads wouldn't choose a pimped up shopping car, would they?
Because that's all a GTI is...let's be honest.
-
If you drove a DSG for a week i bet my last pound you wouldn't go back to a manual
I did over 30k in a one, not for me sorry.
-
the GTI already feels like im playing a video game to start with. DSG just makes it even more inert IMO.
if you sit in traffic alot fine i see the point in DSG. otherwise i'd opt for a manual every time.
i wouldnt dare own a DSG if the car didnt have a warranty.

Had a rental today which was a manual and enjoyed using a manual box. Covered all sorts of driving country roads, motorway and town. Did it feel more involving, yes but not in a positive way gear changes were slow and argricultural in comparison. One of the most alarming things was during the country road driving mostly spirited was the time my left hand was off the wheel and it just felt slightly unsafe compared to my normal drive and yes less in control. In summary if I had to by a car with a manual only option I would buy it no problem, if there is a DSG type (manual/semi auto) option I would choose this over manual. However if there was a regular auto option then no.
-

This most alarming factor here is how quickly you have lost the ability to drive a proper car

What is it with this type of attitude just because I prefer a DSG does not mean I can't drive (i can opperate a manual with no problems as i have explained) there really is no need to slag my or anyone elses driving off as you don't know the first thing about how I drive? You really are taking this far too seriously

lol this one will burn all weekend - night night Golfers

Seriously fella you are winding yourself up with my throw away tongue in cheek comments, chill out and have another beer

Lol you are funny, first of all if you really wanted a drivers car you'd never drive a VW anyway, lets face the facts and get real, it would have to be the GTR !

Surely this funny man is a joker?
If you wanted a 'drivers car' you wouldn't choose a Playstation on wheels that's controlled by computers.
You'd probably spend your £80k on something with the engine in the wrong place, no computer controlled 4WD system, a LSD and an organic link between the drivers foot and the engine....oh, and a manual gearbox!
Unless of course, you just wanted a fast car, with the minimal amount of actual 'driving' required?
-

F1?
Surely this man doesn't read too well ^
"Unless of course, you just wanted a fast car"
I don't live on a F1 circuit, nor do I earn my living winning races...so any comment regarding F1 compared to the real world is utterly pointless.
But, since you mention F1...
Weren't fully computer controlled F1 cars faster?
You know, the ones where the computers did the gear changing, active suspension etc?
The ones where all the driver had to do (still no small feat, I know) was point it in the direction he wanted to go, whilst the computers controlled the throttle, suspension etc?
Do you remember them?
Hardly a 'drivers' car...but a fast one.

LMAO!

As ours GTI's have too many computers in them and are therefore not drivers cars we can then go and sell them and buy some classics from the 60's and claim we are real drivers. Just off to go and buy some driving gloves and flat cap too
-
I just wish I could know everything like some of the people on here.
One day I'll know it all.......

Perhaps if you read the originl comments by out poster with his mighty two posts, you'd agree the response was justified.
I also fail to see how making a sentence readable is too much to ask?
If someone can't be arsed trying to make a point readable...why should others be arsed trying to decipher it?
Oh...but if you don't...you are wrong too, for not giving them enough attention.
If threads like this upset the cotton-wool people of the world...can I suggest not reading them?
Or not getting involved?
Simples.

I don't know it all...
Just more of the basic stuff than many on here who post comments as gospel.
Just because I don't think DSG is the bestest invention in the world ever, or think a Golf is the best car ever, and very similar to a F1 car...I'm the big bad man?
Grow up folks...this is a public forum...and if you don't want to hear opposing views, maybe you should re-consider posting public comments.
