09 plate 2.0 170TDI Manual Tiguan Escape
or
07 plate 2.5 174TDI Toerag Manual
both around 40-60k miles.
both tow enough for me.
Obviously the Toerag won't do as many MPGs
Which would you go for and why?
-
Toerag, borrowed my step mums the other weekend, drives so damn nice! Pure lazy comfort for long treks.
I'll be having that car when her new one arrives.
-
The thing I don't know about the Toerag is the configuration of the 2.5TDI motor. The output is 174BHP which is identical to the T5 Transporter - it would be nice to think they've used that very durable motor, instead of the TDI V6 which is quite a lazy thing. I'm sure someone will know, to save me searching for interweb noildges
-
If this is correct it says the toerag is an inline 5 cylinder so the same as some of the audis?

Sounds like the van motor then.
Probably wouldn't be quite so disappointing in manual form.
It's the interior that really 'sells' the Toerag - palatial and well equipped.... although the 2007 one seemed to have been ordered without any options, bar a towbar.
Not sure I'm old enough to have a Toerag over a Tiguan, mind. :undecided:
-
Doesn't the Toerag have shockingly bad rear visibility.
-
The Toerag is shockingly built. A friend of mine detailed one the other week. Fair enough it had covered 90K miles but the trim was very badly worn, bits of exterior trim were hanging off etc etc
It felt cheap and nasty too; lots and lots of nasty plastic everywhere, bearing in mind that this was the 5 litre V10 model too!!
Tiguan on the other hand is a nicely put together machine if a little plain looking
-
After a quick Youtube, Tiguan all day long.
The escape is the higher suspension set up version.
-
Tiguan is the better buy and would be my choice.
-

Links?
The escape is the higher suspension set up version.
Yes, with underbody protection options. It would probably get used for light green-laning.

But seriously:

Tiguan. They came up with the name after an internet poll for "what shall we call it". It's a hash of German for Tiger and Iguana.
I sh!t you not.

What happened to VW naming cars after Winds...
-
That Irish test is actually bloody brilliant.
Just noticed there's one owned by an utter c*nt in the UK already, which confirms the Tiguan as probably the right vehicle for me.

He's great isn't he. Have a watch of his other road test. Funny as feck (as well as being very good reviews)

Touareg closely related to Porsche Cayenne, and proper 4wd.
Tiguan closely related to a Golf and most are not 4wd. some are Haldex.
Tig has a small boot. Toe rag does not.

And thus proper expensive to sort if it breaks - £4k for a front axle sort of thing.

Most of them are 4Motion and there seem to be people charging about on sand dunes with them, so I suspect the 4WD is pretty robust - I've heard great reports about the T5 4Motion being used on expeditions

Thankfully I only need to carry small children's stuff and shopping, not dead bodies so the boot size shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Looking at a few things online it looks like the 2.5 Toerag returns about 25MPG. The 4Mo Tiguans look to be delivering about 40MPG which is much happier on the wallet.
I do very much like the Toerag, because I think it would be just marvellous, but I suspect my girls would dismiss it out of hand in a back-to-back Tiguan contest, because the Tiguan has fold-down trays on the back of the front seats.
Oh and a lot of the Tiguans have DAB, which is a major draw for me.
-
My Tig does 50mpg at steady 70mph and around 38 around London town but thats driving it like fairy , the new Tigs have fold down seats which is a real + also stop start if you like that sort of thing.
-

Eh? The back seats don't fold down in all of them?!
-

Thats what the dealer told me.
-
As the local dealer told me their demo was 'just what I wanted' after I'd told him I wanted an Escape and then had to admit that the demo wasn't an Escape, I wouldn't put too much faith in what dealers say.
That said German car manufacturers have had funny ideas about rear seats in the past.
-
I managed to get my hands on a match with sunroof, DSG, DAB, Sienna alloys for just under £26000 car should have been £29,500 with mats full tank diesel, so there are deals to be had on the Tigs.

I think with the toerag the seat folding is not as trick as they are in the Tig... They don't fold flat and you need to take the headrest off first.

Having learned to drive on a sh*t-scraper tractor at the age of 13, if there's one thing I can do in this world, it's reverse parking.
Trying one on Tuesday.

Back to the sh!t scrapper I guess.
That is a very harsh description of our Passat.

The 2.5 Touareg is painfully slow, you really need a 3.0. The Tiguan is a very good everyday car, but the Yeti is better.

The Wife liked the Yeti even less. Plasticky apparently
